Used to have an Alex Martin Caledonia 20 bore weighing 5.25 pounds and use 7/8 no7 Hull High Pheasant through it for years. Everything from snipe to greylags

One of my best friends has an Alex Martin 20 BLE.

A lovely, lovely thing.

The RC sipe 26 gram would still be very punchy in a SxS.
I would try Hull High Pheasant 25 gram or Eley Grand Prix
My eldest son shoots RC ‘low recoil’ clay cartridges, 24 gram 7.5’s which are a UK 7. Could be worth a try.

I was told this AYA is cylinder and 1/2, the cheap choke gauge I picked up shows cyl and cyl but I also checked it against my SP 20 bore and it’s not consistent with any of the chokes on that either.

If this has a hole in the end for, say, a split ring then their only real use is as a fishing weight. In view of the "cyl and cyl" it might just pay to get the barrels/chokes checked as never mind the figures there is a train of thought that the '40' for TC is simply to keep things neat. Most TC barrels which throw a 40% pattern more often than not have a couple of thou' of choke; those that don't haven't and are a truly TC.

Thanks, I sent it back, waste of time :)

I’m going to give Hull 25g 6 or Eley Grand Prix 25g 6’s a go I reckon.

I’ll see what the local shops have in.

I know that some people will swear by the Eley Grand Prix. Each to their own. However, I spent my time swearing AT them….!

I tried a box on pigeons during the summer and found them to be awful. I don’t usually mind what velocity cartridges have  - within reason. However these were so slow that I had to give extra lead. I’ve never experienced that before. They didn’t even sound very loud - no umph. I got the impression I may as well have been chucking a hand full of pellets at the pigeons.

The next day I went back to my usual Hull cartridge and they worked as a cartridge should. Instant kills and very smooth.

P.S I would recommend other Eley cart’s, just not a big fan of the Grand Prix.

I think I’ll try and stick with the Hull 25g 6 then, I use their 28/30g 5/6’s in my 20 bore OU and rate them highly.

Millions of dead birds over the last 120+ years would disagree with you!

There might have been millions more dead birds if they were any good…!!

I don’t usually mind most cartridges - within reason - but these were unusual shall we say…..?

What's the latest from our SD member with his 5lb 10oz 20 bore AYA?

Me?

I bought the gun for my use but also a youth gun for my nephew (and hopefully one day my daughter).

I had one of the lads square off the end of the butt pad, and we bought 2x kick-eez pads, one which brings the LOP to about 14 1/2 and another that makes the gun about 13 3/4 LOP.

I shot today due to a fellow gun cancellation and as such haven’t had chance to pick up the hulk carts.

I shot NSI sipe 28g 6’s which were manageable in the gun (I imagine the kick-eez helped).

Lovely little gun and I took 7 pheasants for 15 shots on our little syndicate day.
