Fine it that's it book me in , Then she says that's you booked in but our diary doesn't go that far ahead can you phone back in two week to confirm it ???? how on earth does that work

Your lucky you got through on the phone, our doctors have got this answer system where you are number x in the queue, I usually give up after an hour stuck at potion 10 in the queue.

Something I found out last year when I cut my leg, tried phoning doctors, no luck there, so phone 111, after 10 minutes on the phone to a nice young lady I had an appointment with my GP two days later, apparently all GP surgeries have to allocate so many appointments to the NHS 111 service.

In ours appointments are only taken over the phone at certain times of the day. Invariably, when you try to phone they are all gone. But you can book a routine one for weeks ahead again by phone.

So, some patients who are not knowing this when told at the desk about the set up and unable to get an appointment direct from the receptionist, stand back from the desk and while looking at the receptionist phones her and gets an appointment.

I kid you not.

I rang our surgery first thing yesterday morning to request a telephone consultation as I need some antibiotics [chemo left me immune suppressed] and was pleasantly surprised to find I was only 6 in the queue. Was told I would have a call from a Dr who's name I did not recognise at 10.45 that morning. 10.45 came and went, sat having a coffee for half an hour so got ready to take one of the dogs to the vet for a jab, still no call. 5 minutes into the journey the phone rang, I took the call [handsfree] and pulled over to find it was the surgery wanting my consent to tick the sharing box on their new software and that this was required before the Dr could call. I consented, the call was absolutely crystal clear. 10 mins later phone rang, I could just about make out that it was a Dr asking me what the problem was, the reception was terrible and their followed the usual comedy routine with rubbish phone reception add to that I started to feel that I was talking to an AI Dr who appeared to not be able to understand what I needed and why I needed it. The call dropped out. I waited 5 mins and drove off, the phone rang again - 10 more minutes of comedy routine that clearly indicated this Dr had not read my records nor my requirements for antibiotics as and when required - as decreed by my cancer team at the hospital.
The surgery is rural and under huge pressure with staff leaving due to increased workload and patient base given that each village in their catchment has large numbers of new houses being thrown up. The telephone and appointment system had been failing with long call waits only to be cut off without warning. Appointments, have been virtually impossible to get unless booked weeks ahead. Such was the number of complaints the surgery has held a couple of public meetings to discuss issues but it was interesting to note that the practice manager fielded all the questions, none of the senior partners were in attendance.

My favorite. Has happened twice. Phone call from receptionist "doctor would like to see you asap re your recent blood tests" So I make an appointment for next day. Sit down in surgery and doctor says. "OK mr D what can I do for you?" "You wanted to see me!" Oh did I , I wonder what that's all about?.

Sadly, some seem to work the same scams that the politicos use?

If we want a urgent app you have to phone at 08.30 in the morning but you only get the engaged tone sometimes the call log on the mobile shows i have made 120 calls sometimes your lucky but mostly as said sorry try again tomorrow , i then say fine i will need a house call and often get a appointment for that day . But i never thought i would have to wait 6 weeks for my cortrozone injections a week or two maybe

Doctors and dentists............they bloody disgust me......ive paid my taxes all my life...they get richer and richer...work less hours and im without teeth...

i hate the barstools with a passion

Most of us have paid our taxes but not enough for the services we want. In the past we have poached doctors, dentists and nurses from the third world that could not afford to pay for them. Now the same happens here.

As the empire of the west declines expect the decline to accelerate.

So what are the third world doctors and nurses being paid now that keeps them from coming here, think the last figure I have seen for a GP was around 85k-90k, can they earn that sort of money back home?

Sure, some can,  particularly in the private sector.

We need more at a time when we are attracting less and loosing more.

Oowee most of us have paid our taxes but the proportion of the increasing populace are not paying in but are taking out It would be nice to see a breakdown of those claiming and not paying into the system that have never paid benefit claimants that can work but wont the amount of top earners not paying their dues corporations not paying companies that have had taxpayers cash to bail them out and then pay dividends and bonuses before paying back the bailout money We are heavily taxed here where is the money going? If Doctors could charge for appointments to ensure everyone thats booked turns up it might help If people bought over the counter meds for simple problems instead of going to surgery it might help those that need it. Throwing money at the health system will not cure the present problems

Nurse average pay:

U.K.- £33k.

USA - $82k.

Australia - $87k.

Doctor average pay:

U.K. - £85k according to you.

USA - $242k.

Australia - $165k.

Similar stats with Dentists, earning SIGNIFICANTLY more in Oz and USA.

As usual people will moan saying £85-90k is a good wage, but it’s all relative to your level of education and skill set.

£85k is a decent wage to live comfortably but if your skill set allows you to be earning over $242k (equivalent to £190k+) then quite simply it is peanuts.

The fact that the average median U.K. wage is £33k is irrelevant. We aren’t looking at the ‘average worker’, we are looking at highly skilled highly educated people and if we can’t or won’t pay them a competitive salary based off that skill set then we will continue to lose them.

Also they don’t have to “earn that money back home”.

They can still move to greener pastures, just not to the U.K.

Average net public service costs (cost of the state) £16580 per head. The UK gap between income and expenditure has increased because of covid, brexit and power costs but is overall a reflection of economic decline. The vast majority of the population will be taking from the system rather than contributing.

Sure there are some changes that could be made at the margins but these are easily outweighed by the huge cost items. We are simply living beyond our means. The UK has a champagne taste on a beer budget.

looked at the average salary for a GP in the USA and it varies considerably, Indeed job vacancies for the USA put the average salary for a GP at $136k, although the information on salaries is purely voluntary in the USA, whereas it is freely available in the UK.

Earnings for a salaried GP in the UK range from £65,070 to £98,194, it can be considerably more if they are a GP partner or do private work on top

if the grass is greener on the other side why are they not leaving the UK in droves?

The salaries quoted abroad are for countries that have a healthcare system where you pay for your care through insurance or your wages and is alligned to the average wage earned in these countries, France a socialist country has insurance for its health care you pay23 Euros to see a doctor and get appointment that day when you work for a French co. your health care is paid otherwise you pay yourself. Pharmacies dispense medicines as well as doctors and is 10 Euros for prescription. Could you see this happening here. If doctors pay was increased to the levels abroad then taxes wages and benifits would have to rise to enable people to access care or change the way healthcare system is funded. Out of interest how did health care work before the NHS was founded?

Many are.

Some won’t as they won’t want to uproot their lives/families etc and will accept the pay difference.

112,000 unfilled vacancies across the NHS (not just Doctors) does however show us that we are failing to recruit/train and retain staff in the organisation.

In the USA there are at present 350k job vacancies for nurses alone.

Some countries require alignment exams. Some countries (Canada and Australia) will offer far more money to immigrant doctors in less desirable (remote) locations. There is also the issue of experience required. Many of the more experienced doctors here were on better pay rates here and are now embedded. Many of the disillusioned younger doctors need to get a couple of years under their belt. It would be reasonable to expect the number leaving to steadily increase.

Seems to me these are the sort of changes we need to see here rather than free at the point of delivery. Some means testing system (as with prescriptions) would work. Add in compulsory healthcare insurance for any UK visitors checked at arrival.
