dogone
I am thinking of buying an Audi W7 with 2 litre motor. Part of the attraction is 4wd. I live 5 miles from pavement and will have mud and snow to deal with. Any comments and thoughts appreciated. Presently use a Subaru Outback. The Audi will be a retirement gift to myself. Charliedog
I had one as a hire vehicle in the states, had a stonking powerful V something petrol engine. Superbly comfortable and refined, very well built. You are very aware it is a very big vehicle and this one rarely exceeded 19 mpg. Saying that I would still buy one if I had the need for that type of vehicle, probably something better out there though I would have thought. Wylye
Nice motor. My lad had one for two years and liked it. Tyres were a problem, he couldn't get more than 10k from a set and a grand to pay to replace them.
Gordon R
Eldest lad looked at a Q7, but opted for the Volkswagen Touareg, as it was the same engine and running gear, but weighed a couple of hundredweight less and therefore had better performance. It was the high BHP model and quick, but a truly awful ride. No bump in the road too small to give an uncomfortable ride.

Never knew that, quite a difference then, I would buy one
ph5172
Very heavy on tyres as said above. especially if you are in and out of car parks and going a lot of static wheel locks. rotating them helps but you need to replace in axle pairs as I found ever now and again you would get a ‘kick’ every now and again if they were replaced in singles
Yellowvanman
I would stay with Subaru. As has been mentioned some big Audis have tyre issues, and some have very odd size tyres that only they, Touareg and Porsche somethingorother use. 3 days delivery from Holland last time I got involved, as a AA patrol, but I've been retired from that for 6 years next week. Other running costs are traditionally high with such cars. Stay Jap, Lexus???
chesterse
I had the 3 litre diesel version which was superbly comfortable and a very quick motor however we live in a rural area in the U.K. and it was almost impossible to keep the mice out and from attacking the electrics. I never had any problems with tyre wear 16,000 and hardly touched when I got rid of it. As regards snow and mud I think it would depend on what tyres you have on but would only describe it as a light off roader. Fuel consumption was also good 40 mpg plus. TOPGUN749
For the money and reliability I would prefer a Subaru, Audi is a luxury vehicle but not a truly useful 4 wheel drive, and part prices and maintenance is costly. However if someone has the money to buy one they should have the money to pay the running costs.
London Best
The A6 Allroad seems to be a better/more useful option. I know people who have both and the Allroads get used more as a 4 wheel drive should be used.

Such a shame they’ve stopped producing them for the U.K. Might look at an Outback when I’ve run this into the ground. Our audi a1 3cyl is good but the best we can get is 55mpg.

(not so comfy though!)

I don't think many 1.0l diesel cars would get this. Looking at averages on Fuelly for the Q7 I don't think any other owners are getting close either.
