What’s your preferred discipline?

Hey all!

Whats your preferred shooting discipline and why?

Untill the last year, I in shot Compak as that’s the only range I went to, I like sporting and Skeet, never tried FITASC or Helice…But I do say I do prefer DTL…But not shot ABT yet!

for a couple of months 3 times/week me and my shooting mate used meet at Billy Bells and do 2 rounds of skeet .....we both used sxs and it sharpened us up for the season ahead and when we were asked to shoot over dogs at local trails

never ever been competertive to do it as a sport

I’m a skeet man. Done a bit of sporting, but English skeet my favourite.

Did a bit of ISU skeet when I was younger, which was fun.

My problem is trying to find grounds with skeet layouts near to me. Nearest I can find is about 60 miles away.

English Sporting Registered, FITASC, Sportrap, all the interesting ones that are NOT just repetitive.

Where abouts do you live? Surely there are skeet layouts closer than 60 miles!?

SxS on skeet! I will have to give that a try!!

I shoot sporting at small local grounds but I do love skeet

when the Americans had lakenheath and had the skeet layouts I would go and shoot Nssa skeet mid week and have a range all day and into the evening under floodlights 

I recently went to Las Vegas and visited the Clark county shooting complex and shot 10 rounds of skeet in 43 degree heat at $6 a round they have I think it was 26 skeet and trap layouts and a sporting set up of 50 stands

I now go to bisley and shoot skeet there

Just east of Louth in Lincolnshire.

Not managed to find anywhere closer yet. If anyone knows of anywhere closer, I would be very happy to hear of it.

I enjoy them all; even DTL once in a while if I have the right gun with me. 
I wasn’t a big fan of ‘flushes’ until recently though, regarding them as just a waste of ammo, but mate ( who is a big fan ) and me did a two man flush recently and I really enjoyed it. 
We only dropped two out of twenty on the driven stand and the scorer told us that was down to reloading. We didn’t miss any we actually shot at! 
I may join them next year when they do Lambton. 🙂

Bit of all sorts really ,when me and my lad visit a ground we always have a round of skeet to get warmed up and get our eye in ,then onto a round of  sporting .

To be honest i would find it hard to pick a favourite .

Mostly sporting.  Bit of skeet as well. Years ago used to shoot DTL. Regularly shoot clays with sxs. But my main clay gun is cesar geurini summit ascent 32".  Start shooting clays round march,  then loose intrest once the pigeons start 2nd/3rd week July.  Have absolutely zero interest in them then and in duck/game shooting on.. but do alot of clay shooting between march and July.

 Always preferred English Skeet for practice AND trying a new gun. As it was like a McDonald's burger. Exactly the same and always the same every and any time you shot it. That way you had a true known measure of how you were shooting. Or more importantly how that new gun you'd just bought suited you against how you scored with your other guns.

Yes English Sporting is best for "fun" but as where I shoot the layouts change every two weeks and the course is set to show deceptive birds that don't quite "fly" as you think they appear to be flying...which of course is the point of it. Good for fun but not to use as a known set in stone measure of performance.

That's the problem with English Sporting. It isn't like that McDonald's burger. It varies from week to week and location to location. You can never tell if you are the one causing the miss because you didn't "read" the bird correctly. Or that new bought gun is causing the miss because you are aren't shooting it as well as your old one.

So English Skeet as a self measure. Sporting as a relaxation with friends A shooting friend who golfs (I don't) said Skeet v Sporting is like playing all your golf each week on your home course or playing your golf every week on a different course away from your home course.

Sporting, although I shot a fair bit of skeet in the late 1980's.

I can see some of what you are saying, BUT, if I wish to know if a gun fits me, I take it on a few clays, just 3 or 4 pairs on a stand or two.

I know within a few seconds if it fits me and whether I can work with the weapon.

Last time was for the old Browning I recently bought through PW. 

I met the seller at Orston SG and fired 16 cartridges, BUT I knew after the first two shots That I was buying it.

Yes, I did once a few years ago, spend a few months being coached by the England DTL Team Captain in order to get my 100 straight.

 

They do seem to take it VERY seriously and find all sorts of excuses as to why they missed on or two clays out of the hundred.

Go to a certain ground in Wales, on a Saturday morning and you can't even speak in the clubhouse without getting the 'Look'  from the Trappies corner  !    😂😂

Until mentioned on this thread, I had never really thought about it, but the skeet bunch were invariably more sociable than the trap crowd.

My main discipline is Sporting, I don't mind moderate queues or squads as I enjoy a bit of banter. Skeet is always fun too, although I don't do enough of it to be any good

I haven’t shot any comps yet, but I’m glad I’m getting the advice not to talk on a trap layout!!

Im a bit of a talker to myself, and if I miss, I would say ‘Ah well never mind eh’ or ‘we will get them next time’ and my highest DTL is 18/25 for one round. So a fair bit of talking! Hahaha

Remember..........taking a semi auto within a 5 mile radius of a Trap shooting ground is a HANGING OFFENCE   !    😂

On the plus side, there are not as many trap grounds around now.

Oh dear  !    You would probably be banished to shoot on your own. If a cow in the next field breaks wind, one of the Trappies will be hand up, claiming a 'baulk'   !    😂😂
