Recommend me a 4x4

So... Been looking for a new motor for my antics. I currently drive a Porsche macan and am soon to be moving to a barn conversion in the sticks.

This alongside the shooting has demanded me needing a more robust 4x4 that is ok for the 18 mile commute too. Not keen on spending mega money as I want to not really mind it getting dirty etc... currently in the sights is a VW Amarok. Budget for this is circa £13k ISH obviously cheaper the better.

Just looking for any recommendations in case I have overlooked something or someone has anything to put me off an older Amarok.

Subaru Forester, I have had mine for 4 years and it has been superb (150bhp petrol with CVT).  I have had 3 Discos, a Toyota 4Runner and a Yeti and this is my favourite.

Ooh not thought of a Subaru, take me back to my Impreza days as a youth 🤣 I'll have a look.

16/66 plate dmax 2.5 .

Plenty low milage for your budget. 👍

Pre 1900cc model.

Yeah got a couple of these in the sights. Not too commercial as a daily driver?

Ford ranger 3.2 wildtrack ,  I’ve had mine 3 years and not had any issues at all. Put bf Goodrich ko2’s on it within a week and they’re still on it with circa 40k miles and loads of tread left never been stuck, Lovely to drive not bad on fuel, comfortable,  plenty of space in the cabin and the tub. I couldn’t ask for better! Obviously not a Porsche but I’m more than happy with it

You'd probably not want to save 11K on this that I have listed on marketplace:

2001 Mitsubishi Pinin 2.0 gdi £2200

Apparently we don't link to other media on here so google should work for it. Its had no welding nor needs any and has 2/4WD, hi/lo and difflock. 72 k miles and brand new clutch pads and commercial AT tyres

I had a LWB Pinin for quite a few years and loved it. Great car which never let me down. Pretty good on road and brilliant off road.

Quite like the ranger, what's the mpg on it? Hear they're all quite thirsty.

How about one of these,,,, Skoda Yeti Monte Carlo 2.0 TDI 150PS 4X4 SCR. A friend's chum has one and can't fault it. Also, would look great on the drive of your barn conversion :good:

I've teased with one of these... But the boss says she won't get in it if I had one, said that like it's a negative.

Hey, not sure off the top of my head, it’s not something I keep tabs on. Although, I’m popping out later on so will have a look and come back to you on it 👍🏻

Nothing to put you off an older Amarok.  Personally (despite owning an older Defender), I would not risk a modern LandRover product outside warranty.  Some people have no problems, but a few do - major ones - and they can be eye wateringly expensive.  Also some recent LandRover products are not even 4 wheel drive I believe!

Really 4 x 4's now fall into three categories;

  1. The serious off road capable 4 x 4 SUV, being Defender, Range Rover (older and most recent models), Toyota Land Cruiser family, Mitsubishi Shotgun family, Nissan Patrol family, Mercedes G-wagen, Suzuki, Ineos, VW Toureg and a few others.
  2. The serious off road capable 4 x 4 'truck/crew cab', being Toyota HiLux, Isuzu Dmax, Mitsubishi, Ford etc.
  3. The mainly on roader with 4 wd and light off road capabilities there being LOTS, but the likes of BMW X series (not all are 4wd), Audi Q series, Volvo etc.  Some are quite ground clearance restricted and most are tyre restricted for any soft ground usage.

Many of the lesser so called SUVs are not 4wd at all and are just a styling gimick.

As well as looking at fuel usage - annual taxation rates warrant a look as there are huge variations.  More recent diesels have complex emission kit (DPF and AdBlue) which can cause problems and need to be 'looked after' by the occasional longer journey.  Regular short 'school runs' can lead to a lot of problems.

@Matt_So, I’ve been out and reset the fuel consumption before leaving to give you the most accurate information as possible. The journey was a 36 mile round trip consisting of town driving , b roads, minor a roads and an A road dual carriageway. The gauge was up and down on all roads other than the dual carriageway where it sat at 40mpg consistently. On returning home the average consumption was 29.5mpg.

hope that helps 👍🏻

Which Macan do you have and what do you think of it?

S 3.0 diesel 95b... I like it, more eco than one would expect. Great mile eater on the motorway, just get the spec you want or regret.

Don't forget they're an Audi sq5 in a different frock.

Thanks very much for that sir. Better than I expected to be honest, a worthy thought. I feared the 3.2 would be significantly heftier than that.

Also worth taking into consideration it’s a manual, running on AT tyres has a canopy on the bed and a bed full of shooting equipment 🤣

I brim mine to check MPG and the reality never ties up with what the car says.

Some of those on-board computers exaggerate considerably.

A friend has a car in which the computer says it does 50/51mpg.
If he brims the tank and checks the mileage next time he brims it  the car does between 41 and 44mpg.

Just sayin’.

Mine has a 66litre tank and I get about 500 ish miles per tank. A round trip to my sister in laws is 444miles  I fill up before leaving and still have fuel left on my return.for mileage purposes that’s without taking the driving around whilst up there into account.

my maths isn’t great but I’m sure someone could work out the litres to miles to get the mpg by maths rather than the computer should they wish to 👍🏻
