Bought a few bits of seafoods on Sunday so I thought I would do them tonight , I had one of those Thermidor king prawn gratin left from the other night so that got used , tried some deep fried Monk Fish pieces , a carton of Breaded Calamari and some stir and fry lightly done in oil, and with a spoonful of Tartar sauce on the side . verdict , the gratin was nice , Calamari like strips of rubber , Monk fish was done alright but over rated and the stir fry was alright , the Tartar sauce finished it off

Glad that you are experimenting. Well done.   :good:

I stuck some flour on the fish pieces and put them in the deep fryer when it got to the maximum heat , they were ok but didn't have a lot of taste , the Calamari were like eating strips of rubber , I done them alright and even added a couple of minutes on the stated time , all done in around 30 minutes

...... and that's where you went awry.

Calamari has to be cooked either super fast or very slow to be tender.

In-between gives you the rubber.

You could well be right amateur , the gratin took the longest so the oven was already hot when I put the Calamari in , I believe it said put them in for 12 minutes and it had about 14 minutes left on the timer , time I put the veg on the plate they were most likely in for 15 minutes ,

You live and learn although I don't think I liked them enough to try again , still you don't know until you try it .   MM

Calamari…… Reminds me of a family joke at the expense of Mrs B.
B-in-law has a place in the south of Corfu. Always wishing to be polite and learn “please, thank you etc” in local language Mrs B also learned “good morning” which she would use on our early morning walks. The greeting is Kalimera………(I suspect you’ve guessed it) The locals looked perplexed as she would say Calamari. After a while we corrected her but the joke remains.

I have to admit to having similar experiences with calamari (squid rings).  It very easily goes rubbery and I have never had any that had much flavour to it either.

Not something I would choose as it just doesn't seem to work for me (and I have tried on a few occasions at home - and had 'out' occasionally).  Never had any that I found good.

Looks nice MM, like something you get in a pub restaurant 😋

I know you didn't really like it,,,, so did you complain to the chef and get a refund :yay::lol:

I just had a long thread about about a 19p type refund so I am not going down that road again  , I did mention it to myself but it just went in one ear and out of the other as I said the calamari was a calamity and neither of us took it seriously 😋
