OUT ON THE CROWS AT LAST

got a call from one of my perms asking could we pop down and sort the crows out as a few had been showing,

so off we set at 7.30 am, we arrived at the first field after tucking into a nice English breakfast at 9.30 am to be met by a totally empty field,,we sat there for half an hour and nothing moved,so we decided to set off to the next field and see if anything was about, again nothing, so off we set again to another field that the farmer owns and on this was one or two crows but not the numbers the farmer had been speaking about,

We sat tight to the hedgeline and waited but nothing was moving in the skies, just as we where about to pack in looking we noticed a couple of birds down in the very furthest corner and decided to drive down and see what was happening,

on arriving down in the corner about 50 crows and jackdaws lifted and off they went,

so we decided to give it a go for a couple of hours,

I set up against the hedge with a small overhanging tree above my head and sent my shooting buddy down towards the corner about 100yrds from me, After half an hour they started to return in ones and two,s

I was using my tried and trusted sxs with 3/4 and full choke using 32g 5,5,s (proper carts) and the crows and jackdaws just kept coming, I must say that the minute I put the flapper out it was attracting them in from all angles,it certainly worked,

after 4 hours I had managed 56 but they where still coming and even a few pigeons where showing a passing interest ,

I managed to get 124 with 103 picked due to having a 15ft deep embankment full of brambles and water behind me,, my shooting buddy had 142 with 132 picked so he beat me again, the most important thing I noticed today was that it just goes to show one day the flapper wont work and the next time it works a miracle

weather stayed fine also all day so was very happy,so in all we ended up with 235 birds, on ringing the farmer he popped down and gave us 500 carts to share between the two of us so what a fantastic day we both had

here,s a pic of my bag

Very good day.... well done

Is that a Dacia you are in? if so how do you get on with it?

its not mine but my shooting buddy,s he,s had it since april and is over the moon with it, at 70mph its only clocking 2700rpm and he got rid of his freelander to buy it new,, he said they are cheap and cheerful but he is over the moon with how it performs,,

I must say its a very smooth ride and great on rough ground,

Well done. Excellent write up and shooting. I found that Crows don't like the rota, but Jackdaw's don't seem to mind at all.

hi steve, yes mate they where coming slow at first but the minute I put a flapper out as soon as they saw it they would turn and come in to the homemade decoys,,i,ve used it on other days and its put them off, so it just goes to show what works one day might not the next and vise versa
