Proper morning flight

It has been a very good season up to now and I have had my share of ducks and geese. I have been fairly quiet in this section and haven't reported on any of my outings. This morning was one that I thought worthy of a write-up.

Muncher (Jules) and I met up at 5.15 and made the trudge out onto the marsh. Jules kept mentioning that Mr Brown was in the departure lounge, and it was only a matter of time before he had to pull the chest waders down and answer the call of nature. I must admit, that is something I have yet to do on the marsh!

Ducks and geese were on the menu this morning - we were hoping for a mixed bag.

The tide was pushing nicely as we got into position, but as dawn started to break, few duck were on the move. We were fairly certain, though, that it was a group of 3 or 4 pinks that had managed to slip over us noiselessly while the cartridges had yet to be put in the guns. They certainly moved early! A few small bunches started coming our way and at not great height.

The first lot in range were more over Jules to my left and he pulled off an excellent shot to kill the pink he fired at. I had to make a sharp turn on my knees to get a shot, but alas, my pellets did not find the target. Another small group were soon on the way. Again, the geese were more on Jules' side and he knocked another down cleanly. The next lot came between us, so Jules said I should fire first. I lifted the Xtrema and squeezed the trigger. The lead pink was smacked really hard and I thought it was going to drop. I pulled onto another goose and missed, and with my third shot I finished off the first bird. Strangely, Jules wielding his 425, didn't connect this time.

It was at this point that one or two duck started showing, but they still weren't coming near. Finally, a bunch of a dozen or so teal zipped round low. God knows exactly who killed what, but again I struggled to shoot as the ducks swerved off behind me. One teal was retrieved behind by Shandy, and another that had towered down 70 yards back was later picked by Rudi.

A 'wink wink' was heard close by, as a single pink had almost caught us unawares. Jules called it and it came on beautifully. It set it's wings and was looking for it's mates that he thought were below him (or her) in the now knee-high water. A single shot with a home loaded duck cartridge at approaching 40 yards, was enough to send the goose splashing down stone dead. It was well and truly 'nutted'.

That was pretty much it as far as the goose action went. More were making their way inland, but they were either well high or well wide.

Increasingly, more ducks were coming into view and some decent calling brought them close enough for a few shots. I shot a nice single crossing teal that quickly started to drift off in the strong current. Shandy (my old timer dog) was too slow and so Rudi (Jules' young, athletic dog) had to get swimming and made a nice retrieve.

The flight continued. It seemed that no sooner had the dogs come back with ducks, than more were on the way. Jules took a lovely pair of wigeon that stayed just wide of me. He got another not long after, we both folded one with our first simultaneous shots, and he brought down a cracking long ranger as they went away.

We were missing a species, really. We had seen very few mallard. We were busy calling another bunch of wigeon, when a pair of mallard obliging came forth. Jules took out the drake.

A few minutes later I also got one.

It was a cracking flight, the sort you don't want to end. We walked off very happy, with 8 wigeon, 4 teal, 4 pinks and 2 mallard.

Well done gents (and dogs).

I will be putting finger to keyboard shortly, to regale tales of a great weekend.

That does sound like the perfect flight , if its any consolation I made a long trip for nothing ! hopefully things will be very different tomorrow.
