kyska
Off on holiday tomorrow night, the pure steel fear of flying is upon me now, its been building for 6 months and now its here, I'm honestly feel like I'm as scared as if I were to be executed. I'm not scared of many things, or many men, but flying (oh and polystyrene, freezers, wooden lolly sticks and cotton wool) I'm in a right state now. Anyhow, I'm back in a week, not that anyone will miss me, ****, it takes weeks for me to recover from a flight. MM
as much as i would enjoy taking the ****, im also a very nervous flyer. I managed to get over the flight thing by trying to relax. dont go and get drunk, as this will only make you worse. get your ipod, and bag some popular clasical on it, and listen on the way to the airport, and then when you get on the plane. a very stiring piece piece of music will distract you from the take off, and just close your eyes and shut everything out. When you are up in the air, try again and busy yourself with something. if you have kids, make sure they are entertained, as thats one less hassel for you. If its a long flight, you might want to work out in what order you will do things (movie, ipod, book, snacks,) again, this is all about distraction. Are you able to read in 'private'? If so, something like this may take your mind off it see, its all about distraction. In the days leading up to the flight, dont watch any daft progs like air crash investigation, or the movie Alive. Have a look up in the sky on a clear day, and think about how many planes are up there at any one time. The people who run this show are much smarter than me, you and most on this site, so have a bit of faith in them. Another one i use is to download podcasts from Radio 1 (or whatever your bag is) and have a giggle. (funny looks will follow). When people say dont worry its all very safe, they are telling a partial truth. Nothing in this life is certain, but have a look at the odds. It aint going to happen to you, trust me. Now, when you get there and the holiday is nearly done and you start panicing about comming back, remember that you got there in one piece, so why should you not get home the same way. Lotions and tonics are all snakeoil. Dont try and rely on medication, as when it does not work, you will panic again. JUST RELAX!
Harnser
Dont worry about it . You may be lucky enough that a strike or ash may cancell your flight and you can go home without losing face . Harnser .

Cranfield
MM has given you some good advice, especially stay away from the bars. Why not go to your Doctor and explain your fear and ask for his help. A friend of ours takes a herbal "tranquiliser" before flying and says it helps him. Just think, if you do crash or get blown up etc. you can look at this thread (look up or down, who knows) and say "I told you so" and thus have the last laugh. kyska
Thanks all, I have tried all kinds of things, I used diazepam for a while but to be honest didn't really do a lot, and I got a valium hangover, so I use a betablocker to stop the worst of the adrenaline rush. I think I just need to man it out, but I'm not happy at all, I'll do as MM has said and buy a porn mag. I flew with my little daughter a couple of years back and I was the most 'comfortable' I've ever been on a plane, she's coming with us tomorrow so I'm hoping it'll be the same. Its not just nervousness its panic, my heart rate goes to a critical rate, in turn I can't breathe properly, my vision blurs, tingles in limbs...for most of the flight which exhausts me. Ozzy Fudd
nothing to be scared about, i was in a plane crash once and survived perfectly unscathed  admittedly, it was my own fault (flying a glider in the air cadets) and it wasnt a proper plane crash with explosions and sheets of flame, etc, like you could be facing, but hey ho, chin up!! jasper3
Ile give you the same advice as what was given to Buddy holly and john denver........ don't worry unless you have the same pilot as me when i flew into nepal he was only 3ft 6 " tall and I'm sure he jumped out the seat to apply the breaks  you will be fine

inshallah
Have you ever tried meditating? This may sound like ******** (and i'm the biggest cynic about new age b******* and crystal healing), but it can be very helpful. There are loads of resources on the interweb that will tell you how to do it. Concentrating on my breathing or on a word both work for me. Almost any resource that teaches meditation will come with an associated baggage of complete and utter nonsense, but if you ignore that and learn the technique (which is easy), you can get to a state of relaxation that is 100 times deeper than if you just sit down and try and relax. Learn to do it before you fly, then you know how to do it when you get to the airport.
