gottsy boy
Hi all bit of a weird one here I have had trouble with severe heart burn for about two years now and it's getting me down, I have in the last month seen a specialist and had a camara down into my asophacus, it turns out I have a hiatus hernia, I have now been asked back to the hospital for a 24 hour ph test, Does anyone know about this test and what it's like the camara was hidius and I'm hoping the ph test is not as bad. Does any one else suffer with this problem and have any tips on relief . Thanks Stuart

Fisherman Mike
Ha I,m as thin as a rake mate, In that case your stomach produces too much acid and you will probably be prescribed a long term proton pump inhibitor. try not to worry too much about it Stress is a major contributor. elgreco
Hi I was another sufferer (edge of bed sitter) I had the camera down the thoat. This was enough to make me stop smoking ant start taking my omeprazole tablets regular as clockwork! I only now suffer if I miss a tablet, I was hoping I would one day be able to stop taking them but the doc says otherwise. Cheers Tom
Bazooka Joe
I used to suffer with this years ago, one relief was to get some Bicarbonate of Soda, heaped spoonful, in a glass of frizzy lemonade, quick stir, wop it down. You'll think your guna go pop , but once you burp the relief is tremendous..
lister1
I take omeprazole for a hiatus hernia. They found mine after having the camera down me throat job, I had a done before so the second time I asked them to knock me out. Anyway omeprazole sorts it out. I asked my doc if they could just sort the hernia out instead of taking tablets all the tome but he said that as the hernia is through the diaphram muscle the op is not so simple and they only do it of it causes a serious problem. wymberley
I'm on the tablets but just one 20 mg a day. I used to be quite bad and I really don't want to sound like one of those holier than thou igits, but after almost 55 years of smoking I packed it in and have now got on top of the comfort eating - chocolate - and the improvement is unbelievable. You just have to watch what goes down your throat and if you are going to have a little dabble, make sure it's nowhere near bedtime. Used to use the intrascope/camera at work and found it quite entertaining to see inside myself. I had no problem apart from the little discomfort when they inflate your stomach. They did warn you that the air that's gone down must come out. No problem so went straight to the pub. Mistake. It's quite a lot of air and was quite embarrassing! Fisherman Mike
Ive had the endoscopy twice myself both times without sedation using only the bannana throat spray...because after the first time I needed to drive 170 miles to Norwich to see my sister. Ive had the cystoscopy also which is the camera down the richard with no more than a squirt of KY to lubricate it... That was worse... Doc calls me Rambo...
Vince Green
I get it and am on the tablets. I find the best thing if you get it in the night is to immediately drink cold water to dilute the acid and wash it back down. That at least gives you some instant relief while you hunt for the rennies in the drawer. Take a glass up to bed with you.

ben0850
Same here chaps, I'm on Ranitadine once in the morning and only if I feel the need later at night... Things to avoid...high fat foods (especially pastry, pork pies etc) whiskey, very dry white wine etc. High fat foods kick my reflux off, for example too much mayo in a tuna sarnie. Try looking at how you work if you do a manual job? If I'm logging I won't eat a lot in one go as bending over causes a huge acid reflux. If you are upto your limit on meds then liquid Gaviscon is the dogs danglies for instant relief from acid, forget other off the shelf **** Edited to say elevate your pillow so you sleep slightly upright, it helps no end!! Anything with pastry - Quiche, pastries etc, absolutely kill my gut, but I love them! Fortunately, Omeprazole works for me.
100milesaway
I have had a hiatus hernia for the past 20 years but didn't find out untill about 5 years ago what it was that was causing me discomfort. After having the camera down the gullet the first time which was OK, ( it depends who does it) i was put on Laprazole which are very effective but now and again i need something extra ussually after being in the garden for afew hours, so the i take Gavisscon tablets or liquid, which also help to a degree. You must raise the top of your bed 5 inches and don't have a meal after 6 or 7 oclock,I am even scared to drink anything after 9ish. Anyway this year it has got worse in spite of all my rituals and medication so i had to have the camera down the throat again and even with a throat spray and slight medical calmers i still managed to try to fight the poor consultant. They gave up and decided it would be better if i had the 24 hour monitoring, which i think is what you are lined up for. Unfortunatly i found it as bad if not worse than the endoscopy. They try to put a tube up your nose which then goes directly into your stomach, but they don't knock you out to do it. Needless to say i couldn't let them do that either. I would love to be one of these people that blindly just accepts things without a stuggle but as soon as i feel discomfort or pain i start to fight.Chris Evans the DJ has just been diagnosed with a hiatus hernia but , yes you guessed it in one he got put to sleep for all his test.PM me if you need to know anything else 'cause i'm sure the folks on here feel ill just reading about it. from Auntie.
Vince Green
You can pay privately in which case they put you out. The only reason they don't do it in the NHS is because they have to monitor you for an hour or so afterwards. If I was going to have it done again I would definitly go private. darren m
chaps -- please read -- does this sound like an hernia i have this lump just to the right side ( about 2 inchs ) of my sternum area , sometimes it protrudes in a line just from under my bottom rib . usually after eating a heavy meal ( but not always ).sometimes just from sitting for long periods and sometimes its there when i get up in the morning . it hurts a fair bit and feels like i have something trapped in that space around the ribs but strangely enough it also feels like it tingles/ tiny vibration . i also get acid reflux occasionaly , but that i think is mainly due to being overweight , i have in the past vomited acid in my sleep and also had the taste of blood in my mouth. but that aside i,m a bit confused as to where you can actually get hernias could this be an hernia in that area thanks all
Lampwick
lansaprazole for me too, been on it for years now. Still get a flare up every now and then usually after a few beers and a curry! Lampy
