gixer1
I'm getting used to not having a spare in the last few previous cars, and to be honest I haven't had a puncture in 5 years on any of my cars (I probably will have one now ) according to the kits they will fill a 4mm hole which is a fair hole in a tire! Go with the progress I guess! Regards, Gixer
Chr15j
I run a vehicle leasing business and cine across this all the time. The lack of spare etc is to help reduce emissions as the std vehicle is that much lighter
100milesaway
The last 2 Audi Quatros i bought had stupid space savers so i put the space saver in the cellar and bought proper tyres which didn't exactly fit the boot, but at least i felt safer going to Sussex on a weekend shoot and having to be brought back on a trailer to north yorkshire cause a tyre had ripped out and it would have took me all night to get home at 50mph with a dumb space saver. These ideas are all well and good so long as you don't USE your car..My present grand vitara unfortunately has no spare so if i get a rip out 400 miles from home, i will be severly peeved. There is no space in the boot for my gun and kit and a spare tyre. Grrrrrrr. from Auntie.
stoggieman
My new car came with the can of sealant and a compressor. I think that this may be slightly illegal in some way. However after talking to the local main agent were I bought the car (He is a personal freind) he assured me that the system is quiete safe and in my case better than trying to change a wheel. I have not had a puncture for some years so I have some faith in the supplied kit. However being a belt and braces man I have looked at other options. There is a product available called tyre magic which is a solution that you can have put in your tyre from new. It does not have any problems with tyre balance and is guaranteed to fix a 9mm puncture without loosing much air. I understand it is in military use at the present time. This product leaves a small tell tale orange dot on the outside of the tyre when it has been activated so you know you have had a puncture. It looks a very good product I need to find a supplier in east yorkshire. Due to problems my wife nor I could safely change a wheel but if my wife was out in the car on her own and at night I would feel a lot happier knowing that if she had a puncture she would be safe and be able to drive the car for some considerable distance either home or to a repairer. On test some tyres have been punctured many times and a test was recently done at MIRA with no adverse effects. If anyone knows anything more about such products I would appreciate any info you have. AVB
Mine doesn't even come with a starting handle either. When did they stop throwing them in as well. Rip-off.
Sha Bu Le
In the last 7/8 years I have had at least the same number of punctures, always a clouty nail (always a new nail) through the sidewall where the tread starts and always in the same parking spot at work. Coincidence or what? Thats more flats in a relatively short time than in over 40 years of driving. So new tyre each time, if I had had a can of sealant stuff I would have been well and truly stuffed as sometimes the flats were only days apart. Used to check my parking spot before I pulled in never a sign of a nail, had an angry rant at the production manager told him that if I ever found out why this was happening the person responsible would have 4 flats and a broken face. Guess what no more punctures ??? While this was happening saved the guy £500 on electrical work in his new house. Still what do you expect from a dude with a clammy handshake. ben0850
Hmm wonder I this trend has any relation to my brother having his spare wheel nicked from below his Range Rover last week!
AVB
Hmm wonder I this trend has any relation to my brother having his spare wheel nicked from below his Range Rover last week! Happened to my discovery. Cost about £1,200 to replace including the broken winch. Have a £100 security device in place now. Tell your brother to do the same. Canis
Driving my crasppy renault scenic has few plus points among a stack of bad ones. the full size spare however is one of the good ones - I once had a puncture on a weekend away and found myself having to hang around for the monday morning for a new tire as the space saver isn't to be used on the motorway. A full size spare is now on my minimum spec list for a new car !
speckled frank
Yeah I know that now :-@ She told me when she pulled up to the next service station ?!!??!! I got a phone call saying it didn't feel right but it "looked" like there was air in .... So she kept on going :-( then I was told it's my fault cos I never stopped her .... ...... Women !!!! ( mothers in particular !!) It's understandable. From a distance they only look flat at the bottom! Same with the present Mrs SF's Tigra. No spare but the local Vauxhall dealer sold her about 120 quids worth of cleaning materials for the bodywork. Came in a nice weekend bag though so all is well. pegasus bridge
my bmw has got those stupid 'run flat' tyres, didnt really give it much thought until i did get a flat. no spare, and by run flat, they mean really just to go a couple of miles - they are very bad to drive on (you can really feel its 'flat') its got the space for a spare, but didnt come with one. i'm going to ask for a spare the next time i renew. the enigma
Mrs Enigma's Zafira's got a compressor and a tin of sealant, which is all well and good for a puncture but it isn't worth a fiddler's if you take the side out of the tyre. Thankfully it happened 200 yds from home on a Sunday afternoon, and not in the back of beyond in the wee small hours. You'd think car designers would think these things through.
bobt
what happens if you are in the middle of nowhere, no phone signal etc? at least with a spare you can ruin your clothing to get mobile again.
Zulu
Sons g/f had punc the other night , he got there to help , no spare wheel but compressor and canister , got her up and running ok but she had to pay for new tyre as screw near to tyre wall , Ford wanted £40 for new Ka sealant canister . Better sourcing a spare and keep in boot as I did when I had a Mini .
four-wheel-drive
As it would seem most people these days are incapable of changing a wheel anyway its just call out the break down people would it not be an idea for them to keep a stock on generic spare wheels and when people phone them they bring the appropriate one to fit your car and collect it when you have the puncture mended just a thought and those who are up to it will have there own spear wheel so it would not affect them. neil3728
My freelander also come's with a car of foam and a small compressor. Did ask yesterday while the car was in for a service how much it would cost to get a propper spare. The nice guy actually looked a little worried when he quoted over £500. I laughed and told him i'll stick with the foam.

Don't be daft and even contemplate getting a spare from a dealer, of course they'll quote you book price, get one from a Breakers yard for about £15, knowing the build quality of most Freelanders I'm sure they'll be plenty to choose from..!! neil3728
its a company car so wouldn't even think of putting anything from a breakers yard on it even a spare. At the end of the day i only have the for another 18 months, so I think I'll risk it as it is for the moment. The build quality is very good now a days so doubt i'd find a wheel in a yard anyway.
