sebrobinson
Hey looking for some advice, I am going to travelling around the world for the next 2years, and I am unsure as to what to do with my rifles (17HMR and 223). Should I put them into storage at my local gun rooms or just leave them locked in my gun cabinates at my parents where i keep them? I am going to be notifying my local firearms officer about the situation but thought i would see if anyone has any advice before then! Any info or thoughts would be greatly appeciated! JDog
Put them into store with a registered firearms dealer,(you may have to pay a storage charge), get a receipt for them and send a letter to your local constabulary with a copy of the receipt explaining your intentions. It will not be fair to leave any dealings with the police to your parents.
Imperfection
Provided neither of your parents have access to the guns and the house wont be empty i would leave them there.
leeds chimp
personally I would give them to a RFD just for my own peace of mind

welshwarrior
I go away quite offer for 6 months and just leave mine at home in the cabinet but 2 years is a very long time I'd be tempted to get them stored
steve_b_wales
As they are in a gun cabinet. and the house is always occupied, I would just leave them where they are.
JonathanL
As they are in a gun cabinet. and the house is always occupied, I would just leave them where they are. I would agree here. You'll be looking at significant storage fees over two years. What happens if your RFD closes for some reason? Also, there is also the admitedly remote possibilty that your guns may be accidentally sold by the RFD - not likely but not impossible. In addition there is zero chance of your guns sustaining damage if they are in your cabinet for the period. J.
halfbee
I'm nt certain that my guns would survive 2 years without a regular rubbing down with an oily rag and I don't think a dry pack in the cabinet would be effective for that length of time either. al4x
bear in mind some are up to £2 a week per gun and it starts to add up, personally I would leave them there or sell them and have the slots re opened would be the easiest option, as long as you don't have a renewal coming up and fill the slots when you got back you should be fine. Greenhunter
What about putting each one in a plastic bag with a VP90 sealed in each one after giving them a good coating of oil first. Get as much air out as possible and tape them up. No air equals no moisture and so no rust, hopefully! Just a suggestion. GH

apache
Any parents or friends with a FAC? Easy if your father had a ticket, gets him to add slots and 'share' or 'lend' them to him.
vulpicide
I even put my guns into my RFD even for a fortnights holiday. It does'nt matter what happens while your away your guns and FAC are safe.
Lloyd90
Are you under any obligation to store guns with a RFD when away ?
vulpicide
No but it saves a total ****storm if something happens while you are away.

JonathanL
No but it saves a total ****storm if something happens while you are away. What do you count as being 'away' though? A year? A month? Two weeks? A weekend? It's one of these things that if pople start doing it regularly the police will try to make it de-facto compulsary eventually. J. BlaserF3
Will your FAC expire while you are away? I would leave the guns at home but leave the bolts with an RFD.
