What is the killing range in reality for a full choke 12 bore,

I know it depends on skill, cartridge, shot size and luck but for arguements sake lets say 30g of 6s at a pigeon through full choke.

Ive heard people say 60/70 yards and others saying 30 whats your thoughts or best long shots ?

Ive killed a pigeon at about 70yrds but it was a fluke and not something I can do consistanly.

Thanks

So many variables on this that its impossible to answer. With luck and heavy shot it is theoretically possible to kill out to near 150 yards but in practice its not even worth attempting.Best answer I can offer is what range can you constantly hit a pigeon at?

consistantly 25-35 yards but have had a fair few around 40 but have missed them at 10 yrds but Im not the most experienced shot.

Happy to directed to the clip where he claims to be shooting them at over 100 yards.... 60, 70, 80 yards I have no problem with, over 100 I suspicious.

Heard the bloke commentating saying some were approaching 100 but this is not the same, and they tend to over exagerate on those programmes sadly. Ill sk him at the next shoot were both at and come back with his reply!

Is the OP asking out of curiosity to see what a cartridge can do, or is he asking as a new shooter so he can get an idea of what he can realistically set himself?

If the question is purely to see what a cartridge can do then George Digweed seems to be consistent at dropping birds at 70/80'ish yards; If you consider firstly his skill being better than most of us mere mortals, plus he probably uses the best cartridges possible since cost doesn't come into play. Therefore consistently killing birds at those ranges is probably out of most peoples reach.

If you're decoying then I'd say 85% of your kills will be between 25-35 yards, another 10% 35-45 yards and 5% further or shorter than the ranges mentioned.

Most importantly, keep to ranges that you are comfortable and consistently hitting at, you don't need to be shooting incredibly long ranges to have a great day out and fantastic sporting shots.

PS, I wouldn't want to be shot at at 70 yards!!

I`ll stand next to you, as long as I can wear my full shooting coat and hat and have my back to the gun

I know a man who has done this :lookaround: , wouldn't recommend it obviously but crouched down with his back turned to the gun wearing a wax jacket............the pellets do not penetrate through. GD does fetch down some amazing long birds not to mention technically difficult too but he uses 35g 5's through Full choke I believe and even they wouldn't fold birds at a true 100 yards. Things can look deceiving on camera, a very long bird is probably nowhere near 80 yards in measure terms.

Im not a new shooter just out of practice really I was getting very good at clays then lost interest abit. But kept my gun and licence so had a couple of years break but have got some permission now so getting into decoying, roost shooting and rough shooting have been doing it about a year now so getting back into it but I was asking out of interest to help me understand things better and hopefully help me hit more.

Thanks for the replys
