FINALLY!!!

It's been a tough year for many pigeon shooters and i'm no exception. I've probably had only 5 good days!

It's been made more difficult to shoot a few now, as i've lost well over 1000 acres of peas to shoot on each year.

I'd been keeping an eye on some spring rape over the last week and despite someone shooting there most of the week, i thought it was worth a go. My mate has the permission and i duly got an invite.

I knew exactly where to set up as i've shot the land before.

We met at around 9am and were set up by 10.

The hide was put in the rubbish on the edge of the field - totally in the open.

Over 20 dead birds on cradles were used and these were not added to throughout the day. We used one magnet, which after moving it a couple of times ended up 5 yards bang in front of the hide. The reason for that was because 90% of the birds that decoyed seemed intent on coming straight at it.,

We had a reasonable start, but it took a little while to get used to shooting the xtrema again.

We had 30 birds down in no time and the birds decoyed a treat. The strong wind from behind was a help and a hindrance. It masked the shot noise well and we often had birds forming a queue as a result - some came in and got shot, then reloaded and shot more quickly etc. At times it was difficult to score, though, as soon as the first bird was downed the others turned on the wind and were gone. We still had plenty of left and rights. I also had 3 for 2 shots twice, but had to wait until late in the day to get my only triple. It was nice to see some bunches of 20 decoying so well, my only regret (having just purchased a new Gopro) was that i didn't film it.

Some of the birds were hard to find in the 18" rape, but we made a good job of it.

A very enjoyable day! 176 pigeons killed.

well done fella, very good bag :good: seems spring rape is the in thing at the moment. none round here unfortunately :sad1:

It's probably only about the second time i've shot on spring rape. Not many farmers around here grow it (that i know of) and the four fields on this farm were only drilled because the winter stuff failed.

Hooray, well done, and about time Motty.

That rape looks very tall. Do you think it will be beyond them by next weekend with the forecast of warm weather?

It is far shorter on the other side of the field, so if i'm lucky enough to be asked again, that may be an option.

well done the pair of you :good:

you say your not having a good year on them but you certainly score heavy when you post a bag :good:

Yes, i've had some good bags. It's just a lack of the normal 50 or 60 bird bags that have been disappointing. As mentioned before, the lack of peas now certainly hasn't helped.
