djgeoff
this may have already been covered so sorry if it has. another shooting mate rang me yesterday wanting to know if i would fit a house alarm system, because he has moved his cabinet from loft to another location in his house and he notified them of the move, they sent round a new chap that has now took over for our area and he is insisting on a house alarm to be fitted, which for a decent one will cost about £300 and then i will get the job of fitting it, free i suppose, thats why he rang me i guess lol. is this the norm now? is it law that you should have alarm or does it depend on which officer pays you a visit and what side of the bed he got out of? sitsinhedges
Didn't even think it was law that you needed a cabinet, just to be secure.
Bowen20
In south Yorkshire and I have both rifles and shotguns and didn't have an alarm in the house I lived in and got the rifles and everything I wanted no problems I've since moved and the house I'm in has one but not because I had to. steve_b_wales
I have 'a few ' shotguns and rifles, which are in 4 gun cabinets. I was'nt told that I had to have a house alarm fitted.
Imperfection
I was told by my old FEO they look at the crime statistics for your postcode and set a limit on the amount of firearms held according to that. My limit is 9 and over that i have to fit an alarm-any alarm which only has to be noisy and set for where the guns are stored (my gun stuff is all in a spare bedroom). Over 14 however and it needs to be a monitored alarm where its tied into the rozzers. Whats the crime level like in your area?
Kes
I cannot see why a change from the loft to a 'normal position', triggered a need for an alarm. Two choices here, ring BASC or your chosen shooting organisation or put it back in the loft. I see this as creeping and unnecessary security overload. You should question it via BASC etc BEFORE you install it - in my area I have 1 more gun on my cert (7 in total)than I can fit in my cabinet and will not need to inform the police when I buy the extra guns as ensuring its secure is MY responsibility - I have no alarm ( I do have 2 very big dogs but I dont think that counts) ! welshwarrior
HO guide lines does say if you have a significant number of guns and crime level dependent you may need to fit a security system or words to that effect. Most forces are happy with a basic DIY system with an auto dialler

I'm having an alarm fitted soon, anyway, just for peace of mind while I'm away. Plus, I have a photograph of my ex mother in law on my cabinet, which even frightens me! malantone
I have an alarm fitted for my peace of mind when away from home, the FEO seemed impressed when doing his renewal visit a couple of weeks ago, indeed he made a note of it. Wharf Rat
Didn't even think it was law that you needed a cabinet, just to be secure. +1. They do not even have the power to inspect as a matter of course as far as the actual law goes. All down to interpretation it seems.
kent
The change from loft to house increased the risk as burglers don't tend to search the attic (besides anything else there is no quick 2nd exit). I have had this (alarm thing) on numbers of guns but dogs are taken into account and it don't matter if they are big /small, noisy or mute. I laughed at the alarm suggestion because the FEO couldn't find me and we are 40mins door to door from the station and about an hour extra looking time if your not local. Options are limited but putting parts of said firearms back in a loft safe? or fitting the alarm as requested seems the best plan, no harm to fit an alarm if they feel your home is at risk I suppose
bruno22rf
I have both Shotgun and FAC and have never been asked to fit an alarm-I store Black Powder outside in a shed, however, and was asked to fit an alarm to the shed door-cost a Tenner from B&Q and the FEO was happy with it. armsid
when I lived in Coventry there was no talk of an alarm being req.as my cabinet was in the loft .As has been previously stated crooks don,t look in lofts no escape route. also if alarm goes off who will respond? all that happened in Coventry was a note from the council threatening court action as the neighbours complained .no one bothered to call the police just the noise abatement police. if you go away for a holiday the house is empty anything could trigger the alarm what happens then? an alarm is not needed just good secure cabinets out of sight and difficult access is better
David BASC
There is nothing to say you must have an alarm. House alarms do not, in my experience, make a blind bit of difference. I spoke yesterday to Cheshire police on this very issue and they said that unless the alarm is linked to them then if a house alarm goes off, provided no one has reported someone breaking it they will not bother attending an alarm sounding. Why? because the majority of alarms are false alarms so the police are not going to run around for no real reason. David

12boreblue
No domestic alarms are tied into the Police, there are companies that provide a service which notify persons or the Police, some time ago the Police declared that they would no longer attend domestic alarm calls. So do not see what he wants one for.
