Couple of grouse..

Afternoon all,

Met up with James today and took him for his first walked up grouse..

Arrived on the moor at about 8am lots of low cloud and fog hanging around but we gave it ago..

After about a hour of walking thru rough heather and seeing about 20 or so grouse breaking cover but none presenting a shot James flushed a nice grouse out to his left and a decent shot dropped the grouse in thick heather, unfortunately we couldn't find the bird which is so annoying to loose a downed bird but it happens from time to time..after another half hour or so we were into the birds grouse breaking from our left and rite and I managed another nice bird, we fired about 10 shots each and had a grouse each for our efforts...

Couple of pics from today.,

James is a cracking young lad who knows his gun safety and a decent shooting partner, and dressed correctly for the king of game birds..a pleasure to spend a few hours with..

Absolutely loved that write up Rich...a credit to you both for sure!

Excellent pictures that tell a great story and not to be forgotten! Love the blend of the guns, slip, heather, wood and game bag alongside the grouse.

Really well done :good:

Again a big thank you to Rich. A great host, had a really good time, so nice to get out somewhere different and experience a different sport. Rich also kindly gave the grouse of the day to me, which is now plucked and ready for dinner. Those grouse definitely take some getting round, I do a fair bit of beating and have a fairly active lifestyle, but that is not easy walking!

Thanks again.

James.

Well done again - it is blooming hard work up there isn't it! It's not the distance as much as the awkward terrain - especially the lumpy grass stuff. You will feel it tomorrow!

Had the grouse this evening, we have an ancient aga recipe book for which the game recipes start like "first go out and catch a medium sized hare" etc. Put a knob of butter salt and pepper inside the grouse and stuffed some herbs from the garden inside. Trussed it up and wrapped the breast in some bacon and roasted the whole lot on a piece of toast for about half an hour, with 15 minutes resting with some chips cooked in the juices. Grouse is not like any other game bird and seems to have an individual flavour, a little gamey and very tender. Really enjoyed it.
