Mentalmac
Hi! Was out running last night any noticed that in the council owned green area by my house there were a few tree's that had come down accross the pavement onto the road, thus the council had been out and chopped them into approx 2.5 metre lenghts.. and then just chucked them to the side of the path (not piled just lobbed on the grass). so I phone the local council parks dept and the lady asked her colleagues and the 'general concensus' was that I could help myself to some. I'm thinking free firewood, however would it take the mick if i took the Shogun and filled it up with a fair few logs?

shoot and be safe
No, fill your boots no pun intended You don't get much for free these days
Mentalmac
I guess if anything it's helping the clean-up operation. It can't be efficient to send out a 2 man team and a low loader for a handful of logs. feel much better, off to do some wood collecting tonight :-)
old rooster
Probably be a different matter once you did turn up and help yourself. Better to get written permission TBH.
lees
Go for it, all they seem to do with the logs round here is throw them in a chipper.
955i
If its council owned land it is owned by the council and would technically be theft. However, if you have permission and the name of the person you spoke to can't see a reason why not. You are saving them paying someone else to go do it. 955i
Just a thought (and the hi-vis is a great idea ) but if there is loads, are you sure the Shogun is the biggest vehicle you can get your hands on to load up Could do with a mate with a flatbed truck
Luckyshot
My best mate and shooting partner is a tree surgeon for the council and alot of the time they leave the fallen trees at the side of the road for exactly that reason. Its cheaper and easier for them if someone else takes the logs rather than them send a two man team out to remove them.

ryle
We do tree call out work for the council. All they are interested in is that the wood is away from the road. Personally I leave logs in piles ect hoping for someone to take them, especially down back lanes and quiet roads. The council wont give a crud if you take em. remmyman
Just make sure that you don't drive/stick a wheel on the grass/verge WHY. If you do you can guarantee someone will report you as to 'damage', here speaks the voice of experience! Regards Remmyman

LondonLuke
What kind of trees?, I was going to pick some up but was told poplar never dries out don't know if this is right? GingerCat
It's normally sdhredded/chipped. Have it. I've done similar when told to help myself. It's not dishonest as you've asked so therefore cannot be theft. Don't forget to season it. ...
moose man
Most timber needs logging & splitting then drying for twelve months before burning , ash can be burnt green ...if its softwood ,poplar ,pine etc it burns very quick but if its free it doesn't matter .. good luck

scotslad
Most off the very quick growing hardwoods (willow, popular, elder) will burn but tend to be a bit 'spitty' so watch ur expensive firs side rug When i used to cut on railways we would do the same any decent log sizes we would leave somwhere handy for folk to lift (unless we could find a home for beer money not often enough thou) Have done the same with old fence posts too, about 10+ year ago u could leave them and usually had to go back to lift them nowadays back like the old days everyone desp for fire wood. Council will only be putting them to landfil or chipping anyway, so u are doing them a favour Just a word of caution. If ur tree is still attached to root and windblown. Windblown trees are the most dangeroud type of tree u can cut esp reently blown
jasper3
It surprises me that the actual councils would allow you to take them, especially in this day of health and safety, I thought they would of had red warning tape and signs showing DANGER free firewood... Bargain
