lewis11
Hi all, I am shooting on Friday. It is my first driven day of the season and I'm shooting with a 12g instead of the usual 20g. What cartridge would you recommend for average height partridge and pheasants (12g)? They need to be quite low recoil Thanks in advance
Tim Kelly
30g of 6 shot, fibre wad. Pretty standard fare. Any of the big manufacturers will do something suitable. Don't go for their super premium versions (like black gold for example) as they're probably quicker and will thump you a bit more. I put 30g RC professional through my side by side and find they kill well and are pretty soft on the shoulder. utectok
I shoot all my driven game with a 20 gauge and 28gms of no 6 kills anything if you point it in the right direction. If your used to to shooting a 20bore stick with it
aga man
eley impax if you can get them 30gms 6 or 7 very nice shells through lightweight shotguns
lewis11
Utectok, the reason for change is that my current 20 doesn't fit well and is bad with recoil as it is so light. The 12 I'm using is average weight and very soft to shoot with as it has a pad and is heavier.
figgy
Hull imperial game in 26 or 28 gram, very smooth shooting cartridges. Any true 21/2" Cartridge should be quite soft shooting as designed for older guns. Figgy

matone
Any traditional 1oz fibre no6 will do the job and be pleasant to shoot.
AlistairB
Try the 30g Black Gold Game if recoil is an issue. AB
B525 LIGHT
Depends on the terrain. I'm lucky in that living on the edge of the North York moors they are high all season. I'd say a 32 gram 5 is a realistic starting point around here. It's not uncommon for some to go onto 40 gram 4's after Christmas!! For most birds on more common terrain a 30- 32 gram of 5's or 6's should do. RC sipe's or professional game comes in a 6 which in reality is a 5.5. Hits a little harder and I find them a fantastic shell.

Jonno243
I use only Hull Imperial for all my driven partridge and pheasant. 30g 5's or 6's, though my first choice is always 5's as I seem to kill a bit more consistently with them (I don't even know if that consistency is a measurable quantity, my preference may solely be down to increased confidence in the 5's, particularly on the pheasants). Yeah my 20 didn't fit well and I felt a lot of kick even with light carts a new LH stock sorted that and I shoot well with it now. Have a good day! Main thing relax stay safe and enjoy yourself! Ears
Average pheasant save your money on all these high brass flash case cartridges. Any reasonable 30gram 5 or 6 shot will knock em down. try some pigeon carts by any manufactory. should be fine.
