timmyra608
Hi all am new to pigeon watch and have been shooting for a couple of years and just wanted your opinions on using a Gillis suit when decoying next to a wood rather than takin nets and hide poles! timmyra608
No brambles in the wood, was just thinkin would be a couple less things to carry.
d foxxer
I saw that done a few weeks ago my mates son wore a leaf ghillie and walked up the hedge to a position 90 degrees from us and stood in the hedge [no bramble]just to one side of an ash tree because he noticed that the pigeon that came in over our deeks banked away to the left of us climbing as they went after our shots which gave him a rising crossing target he nailed a good few plus a cock and hen pheasant [i will add now that all arcs of fire were safe] but I have to admit he blended well with the hedge all I could make out was his gun barrel fair play to the boy he hit more than I did
shootgun
If you ever get out of the brambles, let us know how you got on. +1 I had one, brilliant piece of kit, but i sold it fo the same reason... A ghillie suit is more apropiate for ambushing rabbits or calling in foxes during day time....

humperdingle
As a compromise, try a piece of hide net about 3m x 1m... Cut a slit in the middle for the head and wear like a poncho... Works quite well. But... They do get caught on the slightest thing.
stubby
the suits are great, I remember when I bought one for daytime rabbit shooting with the rimfire, sat down against a fence, not realising about brambles, took me half an hour to stand back up sold it straight away
wymberley
My father, apart from the gun, had all his kit in an old MoD canvas back-pack. He would sit in the hedge wearing drab clothing with some net over his knees and a face mask. He brought home pigeon. All he did - which is beyond my capability and I suspect most of us - was to sit still.
Danoi99
I once noticed that many pigeons were drifting away from our hide to go and sit in a tree 100 yds away. I went and sat under it wearing my old British Army clobber (DPM) and a baseball cap that has a veil and leafy bits on the top. Bagged 6 pigeons in as many minutes. Might give it a go with the deeks this year, just sit perfectly still and raise the gun smoothly......no jack in the box style mounting. It could work in some situations, but a ghilli suit would be a bit of a drag me thinks.
thepasty
I find standing or sitting by a hedge with camo gear (not DPM) on effective, dont move until you mount the gun.... I bagged quite a few last summer doing this, its quite liberating to go with only a gun and a pocket of carts.
lakeside1000
I have had days when you could sit out in the field in standard camo and they would still come in over your head, to me as long as you keep still and only lift the gun at the last second you will always get them in close, I was in the wood last week and thought I would set up a small net hide to give me more cover, it took me half an hour to set up, made no difference to the shooting and was a pain in the arsss to get it out of the thorns, never again, just cut a few branches and sit behind them, this time of year some holly or ivy always has plenty of leaf, much more natural. BruceAnderson
For Summer go for the Jack Pyke or Seeland leaf mesh suit, wear black clothing underneath, absolutely brilliant. The swamp man ghillie suits are Ok for Winter and reeds, as its a coat and strap on legs, like gaiters, but strap higher up. Be carefull though as mentioned, you will blend into the surroundings. activeviii
i have sat on the end of a hedgeline, in a fishing chair. with green trousers and a camo coat. two dogs at my side and 6 flocked half shells in the field. one of the best 2 hours decoying i have had. well nearly. just mount the gun slowly, no fast movements. i just waited until the birds had commented. no net and poles to get in the way. i enjoyed it. pigeonblasterian
I have one of these.Believe me you do not want to be wearing it when the weather improves. You get very warm even with just a tee shirt underneath. I do not use it much at all but it is just another bit of equipment that comes in useful at times. Much better i find for laying out in wait for rabbits if there is no cover. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Jack-Pyke-Ghillie-Suit/dp/B002Y0SB5U/ref=pd_sxp_f_i

In seriousness, I do almost the same with my own make shift one when rabbit ambushing, I get completely under a leafy camo net as I find it covers the gun too.... just a sneaky little lift to take a shot. And means you don't need to put it all on. Perhaps this sort of thing could be done for decoying? Sit on a chair and put a net over yourself? woodfordpigeon
I'm sure these were one of the monsters in the Colin Baker era of Doctor Who! Yes I agree what does it look like and what would the public say to see this. They will work no doubt but defo not for me to hideous. One of my syndicate turned up with one on to go stalking. I band them on my ground as we have lots of footpaths over our boundary. woodfordpigeon
chrispti
Some advantages of a decent hide are, you can sit and rest between shots (your movement is masked), your bags, cartridges, food, dog etc are covered. When you see a bird coming in you can stand and get yourself into a good position to take the shot (your movement is masked). Natural foliage can be added so the hide really blends in. Bit of cover from the elements. Room to shoot with friends.
Christopher Polumbos
Depends how long your'e going to be shooting for, Ghillie suits are great.for hiding up and ambushing... problem is at my age (55), I find sitting/kneeling for too long give me dead legs. If I'm there or the day, and as long as I've done my reccying right and I'm in the right position, then it's a hide every time..with room for the dogs/chair/lunch/flask/carts/and everything else I seem to drag along, even though I probably won't need it!
