Fisherman Mike
Anyone have any experience of using High Octane Petrol ? Only ask because I erroneously filled my impreza with 98 octane fuel at the garage a few days ago rather than the normal regular …its not the nutter turbo version but a a 2.0l normally aspirated 2006 Sportwagon R Sport and is pretty brisk none the less. However I have definitely noticed a marked improvement in performance particularly when I dap the foot down in 4th or 5th there are a few Hills on my travel to work and I would normally have to change down from either gear to take them but since I fuelled with the 98 Octane it just pulls up them no problem..its definitely a little quicker pulling away in third also. Is this just my imagination or is there any credence in my findings. The only downside is that its 1.42 per litre rather than 1.26… But one of the guys here swears he gets 15% better fuel ecomony from his RS Focus using 98 Octane Edited January 28, 2014 by Fisherman Mike
Fuji Shooter
I only use it in the Caterham as its too expensive for everyday use but I find it seems to give a little more power when you need it.
Bry-M
High performance engines which can detect the higher Ron will adjust automatically to make use of it. Turbo charged motors will see more of an improvement but n/a will also benefit.
FatherandSon
I had an import Impreza and I lent it to a friend who put in normal unleaded and it brought the engine light on. Plus they're was a noticeable difference in power. Japanese unleaded is some where around 100 Ron, whereas our unleaded is only 95 Ron. BrowningDJC
I only ever used to run my type r on higher octane petrol, honda recommended it. Burns more efficiently and keeps the engine cleaner.
jgguinness
Had a Saab 9-5 Aero a couple of years back. There was a noticable difference between running on normal stuff in comparison to the Shell V-power stuff. In the end it was all I put in it. Used to cost me though Edited January 28, 2014 by jgguinness
ayano3
My astra vxr used to go better on it. Better performance and better miles per gallon. Tesco used to do 99 which was the best I could find.
Brown Sauce
I get better performance and mpg out of the Shell v-power diesel when I give the VRS a birthday. Though at 10p more a litre, think the gains, if any are marginal.
Del T
I run the evo on it as its mapped to run on the good stuff.
roadkill
I had a rx7 that would only run on 98 Ron or higher
Munzy
I have tried it in my M3 a few times and can't notice any difference. I'm usually carried away by the placebo effect too, I only have to fiddle with the oil filler cap to feel like the car is running smoother! Dazza9t9
I've had skylines, imprezas and 200sx always ran then on high octane. Don't bother with the 120d 5th gear did something on this a few years ago. The higher octane did give a few bhp extra but it was only a couple..... 2 at best. Brad93
Depends what level of tune & compression your engine is running. If it has been mapped to make the best of higher octane petrol (i.e. Mk1 Focus RS, Nissan R35, turbo hot hatch) then you will get better response from the pedal, slightly more bhp, possibly more MPG. Everyday N/A car under 150bhp not going to affect mpg or bhp, will notice better responsiveness. Its fun to put some in my fiesta zetec s sometime it does run smoother.
