steve_b_wales
Most police forces don't like it if you have, for example, a 3 gun cabinet and put 4 in there. There is no law to stop you doing this. As for buying shotguns, you can buy as many as you want. You could walk into a RFD and purchase 20 in one go if you wanted too. You may get the police asking why you need so many, and they would probably insist that you have added security in your home, eg, burglar alarm, but there is no law against this. Unlike rifles, where you have to have good reason for each and every one, to allow you to possess them. All my firearms are in 4 cabinets, and I have'nt had any complaints from my police force. smokinggun
Im in cambridgeshire and they were fine with me putting more in my 3 gun safe, I emailed and asked my feo before I bought more than 3 and the reply was that a 3 gun safe can usually hold 5 and it depends how careful the cert holder wants to be with regards to squeezing the guns in, they also said as long as the door will close and lock they were happy. If your unsure then just fire a email off to your feo but I can't see why there would be a problem with putting 5 in your 3 gun safe mate I just had to put one upside down and they fitted in fine. Maybe it is down to different police forces but it seems silly as if they are locked away then what's the problem.
bunybasher1000
just had a visit last week.feo said i need to check your security i have held fac.and shotgun for 15 years.visit was by arrangement.when he arrived he asked to check my cabinet.on entering the gun room he says problem solved.i say wot problem.he says you have 11 shotguns and 3 rifles.i asked how many should i have. answer you only have 1 five gun cabinet on my file.i said your predecessor came out many years ago an checked my 10 gun cabinet.not to worry your covered. then after checking all the serial numbers finds 2 not 1 but 2 guns that i sold at least 12 months ago.files amended of on his way.i did ask how many guns allowed. dont u think you have enough?.i personally think it is at the discretion of the feo.by the way i had notified change of ownership they had not upgraded there records . Twistedsanity
I have a really old 3 gun cabinet and when the FEO came to check it out for my cert he said I could fit five in there !
kent
This show the effectiveness of our national gun database doesn't it. Been said previously but look at the size of DVLC and they still makes mistakes. There is some sort of guidance notes on suggested numbers before extra security conditions might be asked of, cant remember how many but I once crossed it and reduced, BASC advised me and it needed heading off at the pass so to speak. saddler
Seems to be a lot of bad advice from some FEOs on numbers! The Home Office Guidance to Police states that the number of guns alone is NOT sufficient reason to insist that an alarm is fitted.

bostonmick
hi all thanks for replies, just spoke to west mercia fad and been told because gun cabient holds 3 guns that is the amount i can hold on licence if i want more guns i have to get a bigger cabient. Seems fair enough.to many guns stacked into a cabinet would most likely lead to some damage.and cabinets are cheaper than repairs.

Dekers
There is no set limit on the number you can hold, security can become an issue if you have lots, but again there is no limit on how many you can cram into a cabinet. It is obvious from comments above regions make the rules up as they go!
bostonmick
I have a alarm fitted not solely for the guns.it phones me if disturbed being burgled is not a pleasant experience.

That's a shame mate, seems a silly pointless rule from them as what does it matter as long as they fit in, if you split 5 over two safes there is no more security than crammed in one as long as it locks, as I said cambridgeshire took the sensible approach and were fine with it, my door shuts easily and its not really a squeeze and none are damaged. bobt
I think the reason being, if you are cramming them in, you may decide to leave a couple out of the cabinet.

They are simply saying you can only hold what you can store securely, and you can get more than 3 guns in most 3 gun cabinets!

Westley
I've got a buffalo river 7 gun but the shop said tell them 10 . It's got 3 and I still damage them :( That is why all six of my guns are stored in seperate silicone type socks. Helps stop minor dints and dings when taking in or out of cabinet.
