Morning all

we will hopefully be moving into our new house in the next 6 weeks or so and as the house were buying doesnt have a fire in the lounge just the chimney breast im torn between a open fire or a log burner..

i have a nice log burner fitted in my house at the moment and it heats it all up a treat..

but keep thinking about a open fire..

has anyone had both? and which is best so to speak??

I have had both, the log burner I have now is the most efficient but the open fire was more fun to use.

You can sit by an open fire and mess about with it.

I don't recommend letting your log burner slumber though as it's a sure fire way of coating your chimney in rubbish.

This is true. I used to keep my log burner going for weeks on end through the winter. I got through stacks of flue cleaner and had to sweep it about every six weeks. It was very warm and very cheap to run though. Alternatively you can get air-wash log burners now that don't soot the glass up so you can always see the fire. I don't think they are as fuel efficient as an old-fashioned but dirty stove like my old Villager which could be left on tick-over permanently but they will be more efficient than an open fire.

Alternatively you can get open Jetmasters which are just air controlled fireboxes with no doors.

I have both at the moment - log burner is a multifuel which will operate with the doors open - its a stovax 25kw.

The open fire is much less efficient but more of a feature - that said the Stovax can be operated open or closed and is mega -hot. Both, when open require a fireguard.

Go for a good cast - iron jobbie would be my advice.

Efficiency means stove, safety means stove. We have a stove with two rings on top and hardly ever use electric to boil a kettle in winter and it has a great single oven. Stoves are also less messy, I can burn ours away to nothing and in an open fire you always seem to get a lot of unburned fuel remnants.

I have a huge open fire it heats the whole house but it costs, it uses far too much coal or wood but i love it I have thought about a log burner for effieciency but keep the coal fire its so nice sat in front of it with a nice glass of wine. maybe one day but for now i will keep it my reluctance is probably also due to actually making the fireplace and the grate, atb wayne

No contest. :yahoo:

Its not a contest but a comparison. I have both and the burner contains the fire on four sides ( unless you have the door open) whereas there is something inherently pagan about an open fire, its comforting, romantic and soporific unlike a souped up crematorium oven with a length of stove pipe on it which is functional but rather utilitarian at the same time.

Open fire for me every time

No contest! :yahoo::lol:

Have had both now got wood burner and a open fire is a lot nicer. You get more heat off it and all the crackling sounds and flames. If you get a all night burner grate and fret you can controll the open fire to the point of smouldering all night ticking over the open it up in the morning add a bit more and nice roaring fire in no time.

Enjoy whichever you choose.

Where you off to mate not far i hope i have a multi fuel stove so use both when its very cold we burn coal and once every one is warm we use timber and with having a large wood at the back the timber is not a problem there are are always trees down

Just about 5 mins away mark..you in on Wednesday ?? Will pop round for a brew?
