turbo33
My shooting mate Bluebarrels has been showing an interest in buying a Hushpower 410. Couldn't quite bring himself to part with his hard earned cash and instead, is lavishing it on his good lady abroad as I type So I decided to give mine an outing today, popped a couple of boxes of 3" subs in the kit bag, and threw the rest of the decoying gubbins in the truck! I took the 20g as a bit of insurance. The farm has been really overshot by one chap, and the very few birds that are about are understandably, very wary! I arrived at the farm at 10am. Drove round the whole patch and not a bird anywhere The farm manager was hedging, so he stopped for a natter. He was trying to get it all done so they can get on and sow the rape. They have a terrible time with the EU bureaucrats. Next year, they aren't allowed to cut the hedges until September, and the crops need to be sown by the end of August. So as soon as the sowing is all nicely done, then you have to drive all over it to cut the hedges, you couldn't make it up Anyway, I found a pathetic few birds showing a bit of interest in the last bit of stubble. It just confirmed my belief that its not the grain they are interested in, as there wasn't a thing on the ground, it was the assorted weeds. Looking back over 30+ years, we used to shoot stubble right into December, for that very reason, and good shooting it was too! So I set up with a few full bodied decoys, some feeders, some normal. I pinched Chris Greens idea a while ago and made hangers for them to hook onto fishing line loops through their backs. They worked really well in the breeze, and looked very realistic. No magnets, flappers, floaters or angels. There wasn't a great deal of traffic, just the odd one passing by now and again, but just enough to keep the enthusiasm going Every now and again I thought, That's it, I'll pack up, and one would fly in I missed the first bird comprehensively, and confidence shattered in the little gauge ( couldn't possibly be my shooting ) I got the 20g out. Missed the next bird and OMG, the noise......... sleeved that and got the little Mossberg back out!! I connected with the next three birds on the trot, so back on form, I stuck with it. The "clack" from the shot and a bird folding kept a silly grin on my face for the afternoon At 4pm, I decided that really was it, and reluctantly, packed up. I finished on 18 birds, and whilst it won't be the biggest bag on PW this weekend, the happy factor probably will be

motty
Nice going. I took my .410 out at first light this morning. I had a couple of pleasant hours in the fresh air. I only shot 4 pigeons, but I still enjoyed it. I love going about my business with the quiet little gun.

rich1985
Sounds very enjoyable , I can see one of those in the cabinet once funds are available ! Go for the 20 bore. I had the .410 but upgraded to the 20 for that bit of extra kill, still quiet as hell. Cracking bit of kit. Out tomorrow on rape stubble. sitsinhedges
Great looking gun and great shooting but if you get the 20g Husher with its larger shot load I think it will be a game changer for you.

Dead-Eyed Duck
Stupid question, but how much quieter is a 20g Hushpower than a 'standard' 20g? Do you have to use subsonic cartridges, and if not what weight do you use. I have always fancied a moderated 20g, but have never heard one. Do you have to use subsonic cartridges, and if not what weight do you use. I have always fancied a moderated 20g, but have never heard one. It's quiet! The person firing the gun hears a bit of a crack but go and stand 100 yards away and just a twang, use mine all the time fire thousands and thousands of rounds a year throu it. Decoying it's the business! Especially with a tad of wind makes it even quieter. Use a bigger shot size such as 5 or 4 if you can get 4s brilliant. I use 28gram 5 shot eley hi flyer, they are just as quiet as the subs but a far superior load. Can't recommend the mossberg hushpower enough, seems bit of a thing at the start but they are so shootable, take it clay bashing a few times, you will soon be getting some good scores! Cranfield
Good result with the .410. not too much room for error. I am using my 20ga Hushpower o/u more and more, I think its quieter than the 20ga Hushpower Mossberg pump I use to have and much easier to use. When I bought the 410 Mossberg, I was so impressed with it, I had my eyes peeled, to the point of bleeding ( ) for a 20g version. Eventually, one cropped up and I bought it. I tried, but was very disappointed with it and it just didn't work for me. Twas like trying to move a scaffold plank 180 degrees quickly!! However. I haven't dismissed the idea, and am slightly on the lookout for an investarm o/u husher as its shorter than the Mossberg. The only thing holding me back a bit is the 410 is such a cracking gun at usual decoying ranges, I have no need for more as it just gets on and does the job. I'm just not sure the extra bulk of the 20g is necessary, however, I can reload subs for the 20g Whats your other 20g hushpower? I chatted with cranfield few months ago over the very same thing, I used to have the investarm 20g husher and swapped it fpr the mossbergh 20g pump and can honestly say I,m getting on better with it than the investarm, to the point were I,m actually confident with it and hit a lot more whereas I wasn,t with the investarm horses for courses I suppose

An Investarm o/u, the moderator is on the full barrel, not stuck mostly on the end, therefore the barrel length is 30", making it much easier to swing IMO (and get in the gun cabinet). goober
I've used my .410 hushpower more this year and once you get used to it they are fun to use. I stuck a 10mmx10mmx30mm magnet on the rib over the breech and it gives me a better line of sight when looking down the rib and moderator.
