triumph_Dave
Broken link. This is the article. http://www.westerndailypress.co.uk/Mystery-guns-haul-pulled-river/story-26071337-detail/story.html Thanks for that, looks like the newspaper has added more content and reworded from the original story.. I see the location has changed from a taunton river to out on the levels at greylake.. Cant see it being a 2nd world war stash though.. surely more modern equipment in the haul.. 10gaugewannabee
first up, cant see that spot being undistrubed for 60 years near sluce gates so muntions factory worker, nope also war time pride would not have allowed it to happen un licenced collectore yes but, how do you prove a rusty stick is a deact or live ira yes i see that and give em 15-20 years ago would fit with the time scales to, but there are many other causes that would have had that sort of fire power, 1980's far right groups, nationalists for scotland, wales and ireland both sides but lets blame the ira they do a lot of magnet fishing in brum, shotguns, hand guns and rifles, scooters and motor cycles, drug transporters use the canal systems and they have a steel iten in the package. if someone comes along you can dump it and mag it back later
39TDS
also war time pride would not have allowed it to happen At the end of the war an enormous amount of guns and ammunition were simply thrown into lakes and ponds to get rid of them. No pride involved. Mostly but not exclusively Home Guard surplus.
gemini52
Looks like the remains of a mg34.be interesting to find out how long they were in the river.
Vince Green
They didn't look like they had been in the water that long to me. Police spokesman said it might have dated back to the war but there is an AK47 and the 47 stand for 1947. That drain must be dredged fairly regularly i would have thought Magnet fishing is done fairly commonly by treasure hunters, they find all sorts depending on where they do it. Probably a fair few old guns. Edited February 25, 2015 by Vince Green
Scully
This is the sort of find I dreamed of as a young lad, and I wouldn't have told a soul. Following the handgun ban I bumped into a bloke I use to give a hand to on the scrap job many years ago. He said he had a yard full of guns so I went round one night for a look. Absolutely nothing worth salvaging, not even a set of grips.
norfolk dumpling
When I started getting interested in guns my dad, a farmers son, told me of the day my grandfather asked his 3 sons to empty out the contents of the 'powder room' - an outbuilding near their farm house - and dump this into the pond at the side of the main driveway. With the advent of centre fire guns and tractors they were dumping the old muzzle loaders, gunpowder, powder horns, horse tack, horse brasses etcetc. It took them a day to empty the building of this obsolete kit and a further day to fill in the pond. I know where this was - anyone got a metal detector??
