Well decided to buy the above film tonight and watched with the girlfriend.

what a great, realistic, powerful film. I thought anyway, historical accuracy seemed to be there too which is a bonus and the special effects were good.

A true insight into a second world war tank crew; what a horrible job.... :/

Your thoughts and comments would be interesting to read :)

Atb, Dave.

Apparently a grenade in the enclosed confines of a tank will kill you but leave your body with just cuts and bruises thus enabling your colleague to have a poignant last moment...

As an aside one of the tank owners who was brought in to drive and was fully uniformed etc was discovered to be on long term sick for a bad back but was busted when his benefits supervisor saw him in the film - nothing like keeping it on the down low when you're swinging the lead!

I didn't think it was that great, I thought it was a bit 'Hollywood' tbh

I was the exact opposite I had declined a couple of opportunities to watch it fearing it would be the usual yank shoot em up drivel, I was bored one night so thought I will give it a go, as a local chap was an extra in it,and I found it to be a fantastic film far far better than I had anticipated, perhaps to watch films like this you need the ability to understand its purpose is entertainment rather than be a documentary.

For sure, for a war film it was watchable.

However,if it started with,This Is Based On True Events, then it would have been pure plum.Personally,if it claims that then i like it pretty realistic, hence Lone Survivor equals plum.

a good film ruined for me by two things - the tank battle with a single german tank which manages to destroy two other tanks with a single shot to each then ends up driving in a tight circle with brad pitts tank shooting at each other. what a load of sh!te.

the last scene which went on way too long was so utterly stupid i had to force myself to stay and not walk out.

I was watching a documentary about tanks, and an American or Canadian soldier said that their Shermans couldn't penetrate the frontal armour of a German Tiger tank (as in the film). Whereas the gun of a German Tiger would go straight through the frontal armour of a Sherman, and come out the other end :O I thought the scene in the film was pretty good, as the only way a Sherman could take on a Tiger is from behind. They could have done that, or used their superior speed to escape, but that wouldn't make good viewing :D

Like it's been said, the end battle was a bit naff, and it was stupid how a grenade in the confines of a tank barely even scratched Brad Pitt's body. It's not a bad film, but I just think they felt they had to Hollywood it up, and put a heroic Brad Pitt scene at the end.

If you like a good WW2 war drama, I'd recommend "Generation War". It's in German, but subtitled, and it's on YouTube. Band of Brothers is another series worth a watch. The Pacific is OK, but it's a bit more of a drama, whereas Band of Brothers is just 10 hours of brutal action.

Jut watched. Final battle is silly. Germans keep shooting a tank with small arms, they had loads of panzerfausts too. Cannot believe they didn't set up a secondary position. It's all

Hollywood though. Saving private Ryan was better. Did like the little touches though, like the German prisoners in stress positions in the background in one scene.

I liked it, despite its distance from reality. The last 'scene' was literally incredible, in particular where the SS soldier looks under the tank and lets the lone survivor live. Not typical SS behaviour.

Private Ryan was praised by those who were there for the most realistic portrayal of the D -day landings, cant beat that.

Band Of Brothers was exceptional and Pacific rather lack lustre. But as Kdubya says- its entertainment.

If we want facts we have 'The World at War', still, I think , the best documentary of the war ever produced and with Laurence Olivier narrating - exceptional.

This is Hollywood balls, but good entertainment nonetheless. If you want a great, realistic war story and the effects it had on everyday people caught up in it then Generation War is excellent veiwing. As with Das Boot, the Germans seem to be able to portray the horrors of war in film without needing to add any yahoo or schmalz.
