The last 'scene' was literally incredible, in particular where the SS soldier looks under the tank and lets the lone survivor live. Not typical SS behaviour. Exactly, in I am afraid in reality he would have been shot at best. Also how long did it take in 'movie time' for the Germans to arrive? they were just round the corner when spotted but there was still plenty of time for some more stories to be told/ a few more drinks/ discussion about who was staying who was going/ some more stories/another drink or two etc etc... Scully Posted March 23, 2015 Report Share Posted March 23, 2015 I haven't seen the film but will make a point of doing so; there aren't many incidences of tank crews featuring in films. Something along the lines of 'Das Tank' would be superb. Someone loaned me a book and in it was an account of a Russian T34 tank and crew who for about 4 days resisted all attempts by German forces to shift it from a road they needed to take and couldn't divert without a lengthy detour. Despite all efforts and even direct hits from the greatly feared 88mm which was eventually brought forward specifically for the job, the tank and its crew not only resisted the German forces but continued to return fire for days, inflicting many casualties, before ultimately succumbing to superior forces. If I recall I think it was later discovered by the Germans that one man had continued to fight on, on his own after all his other crew had been killed inside the tank. It must have been unbelievably grim in there. Now that would be a film worth making. Can't post a link as it was some time ago now and can't recall the title of the book. That's the one, he had some very important dialog so he could not die until 2 German grenades fell on his lap in the tank and ruffled his hair a bit. deadeye18 Posted March 23, 2015 Report Share Posted March 23, 2015 (edited) Watched it last week,Very Good film even though it was hollywood history. two things that deffo wouldnt have happend was the slow moving shermans being shot at and missed by the pak40 anti tank gun and when they charge the tiger tank that shoots and misses them too,one shot even richochets off!still well worth watching though!!! I think its a good film about how the soldiers have changed and how they become less human. You should try one called Invasion,theyre coming!by paul carell.very good first hand accounts from the german side.Id like to see a decent modern made war film where the british and canadians are the main focus instead of it being about the americans all the time. Why throw hundreds of men and their resources at a single tank? the Germans would have boxed off the tank, covered it with minimal effective fire and starved them out while the rest of their company moved on. Danger-Mouse Posted July 10, 2015 Report Share Posted July 10, 2015 For a more modern take on war I`d highly recommend "Generation Kill" written by Evan Wright, a Rolling Stone reporter embedded with the US Marine Corps First Recon group during the Iraq War. Read the book, watch the TV series, both are excellent and for once the series is virtually identical to the book. It even features a genuine member of the marines.
