Saddend me a little!

I found this earth and cubs a couple of weeks ago and then the virus returned and stopped me from going back.

I returned tonight and sat it out.

Near 8.30pm the cubs came out to play.

Eventually one cub sat on his own up above the earth entrance. I thought that is where she will enter the scene!

She did and I was ready. When the shooting stopped all five cubs were done and the vixen.

I got the vixen through the neck which was pure fortune because I was aiming for the ribs!

Looking back at the firing point there was a lot of twigs in the way that I was unaware of! So, very fortunate!

I take no pleasure in this one. It was a job sort of thing. Scores of hens have been killed on an egg unit.

It was a trade, a trade for freedom on this ground and my time in pest control.

Still saddened my a little, must be getting soft!

I Despatched two cubs early this morning on a free range chicken farm after a call from the proprietor.

Mum had either abandoned them or been killed I think because no sign of her .

No pleasure what so ever but as you say a job that need to be done

Just out of interest What distance were you at u ?

I can understand and sympathise with your feelings. As I have aged I tend to dwell on such matters but accept that I must do what the land owner would expect of me.Sadly I recognise that if I do not comply, others, possibly with less scruples/abilities will soon fill my place. As an aside I notice nature's predators seem to have much less of a moral issue and appear to care not for the feelings/suffering of their prey.

Cats are awful for it, I'm not a fan of rats but when the cat brings them in and beats the living out of them around the house i can't help feel like the cat could do with some education on morality.

If the Job had to be done at least you did it right and humane, no wounded foxes, and no starving cubs.

if you dont feel a bit like that when doing a job like that....then you shouldnt do it........its called respect for the countryside and managment.............im not really into that sort of thing but i have no problems with anyone who shoots with respect

This is my issue with the greeny anti's.

Most of them would kill a rat that eats their veg/food or damages their house shed etc. Poison them and let them die a horrible death. Because? ...."oh rats are horrible arn't they?" And a fox is different because?... "oh they look cute!" :hmm:

Whats the difference between any animal/vermin/pest including foxes?

All animals, if it has to be dispatched, deserve a fast, painless (as much as possible) death.

Something I would do to protect wild game, especially Grey Partridge, but if the chicken unit is experiencing severe problems then maybe they should invest in a decent perimeter fence? Foxes won,t kill them them if they can't get at them.

Another good point!

They went the electric fence way, something I would of advised against. The place is however fox heaven. Pheasant and rabbit everywhere and useless gamekeepers lol.

How good a fence do you need though.... A couple of years ago I had one on a chicken farm that had electric fencing plus the 6ft building site barriers round. I shot a dozen foxes over a few nights before hearing an almighty bang and working out one knew if it went flat out it could just clear the electric and clamber over the barrier. Shot that and the problem went away.
