ChrisAsh
for safety is it worth re proofing it
Mutiny
as far as safety is concerned yes it would make sense to re proof, but I've been told that while the gun is sound it *may* not stand up to the proof testing. As the gun has been in my family for generations I'm not particularly keen on sending it off to proof and not getting it back. I'll be firing it remotely the first time, just in case! Old Boggy
As you have ascertained the date of manufacture, I therefore assume that you have been in touch with Rodney Ford who I understand owns the Pape records (or did when I had a couple of Papes) If not, his address is (or was) -: 51 South End Bassingham Royston Herts SG8 5NL Tel.No.01763 243736 Hope that this is of help if not already known. OB Ps. Lovely gun and beautifully restored by James. Did Dan Bromley do the barrels ?
minibbb
That is truly stunning! I would never have imagined it could look this good! Are you in a position to provide a ballpark figure of the restoration cost?
Old farrier
Well done the pair of you Op for having it done 😊👍🤗 And James for the work done on it 😊🤗👍 Great family treasure All the best Of
ChrisAsh
I never realised you could break down a muzzle loader just assumed they were all one piece, How is the barrel locked on to the wood?
Mutiny
Hope that this is of help if not already known.OBPs. Lovely gun and beautifully restored by James. Did Dan Bromley do the barrels ?That's a great help thanks - we did not know who owned the Pape records so that's great I'll get it touch and see if he still has them! The barrels were browned by James and the re-engraving was done by Malcolm Long Chrisash the barrels are held in place by a sliding bar like this - Thanks for the replies guys, I'm so happy with how it's turned out and I just can't get over the transformation
wisdom
Looks fantastic you wouldn't think it was the same one.
demonwolf444
thankyou for the kind comments, it took a more heavy handed approach that I would normally take due to the severity of the rust and pitting. More pictures of this gun and other work are on my Instagram "Woodworking_gunsmith" https://www.instagram.com/woodworking_gunsmith/ The barrels all but fell apart as the rust had compromised the soldiering so the barrels were stripped and rejoined which also allowed me to inspect between the ribs. I normally brown my own barrels but for whatever wizardry they were unresponsive to my methods so they were struck off and sent to Dan Bromley who finished them to the excellent standard pictured. Everything else, replacement spring, ram rod with captive worm, case, replacement screw, refinishing, checkering, and general cleaning was completed my myself.
