fenboy
While I was shooting the bag I posted a few days ago I had a call from my farmer to say another field was starting to get a lot of pigeon on it. So after lunch yesterday I had a ride out to have a look at it , though there were not many on the peas it had clearly suffered quite a bit of damage , I walked into the orchard next to the field and put a few 100 out of there . I had my doubts there would be much on offer thinking that the pigeon are just hopping out of the orchard for a feed then back , I thought a shot or two would clear the orchard out and that would be that . I thought I had better show my face today to keep the farmer happy , I invited motty saying it may be slow , but he stood me up for baby sitting duties ! I was set up a little after dinner , and soon had a little interest , it was soon clear I was having a off day with my shooting taking around 30-35 shots to put the first 15 in the bag , I lost some confidence and was hesitating on birds which were shootable which made things even worse , by now there was a constant stream of pigeon to the field , most going wide of me or ignoring the decoys . I started to shoot a little better but still not to my usual standard and the bag stared to build , I did manage one triple and a handful of doubles but I was still missing a few easy birds , I am sure had motty been allowed out to play I would be reporting a good 100 bag , but as it was I had to settle for 77 picked , 72 in the photo 5 picked in the orchard , unfortunately some crows had beat me to a couple of those ! motty
Those pigeons have certainly had a chew, there. Shame I couldn't make it, but I took the kids clay shooting, which was fun. I don't think they'd enjoy sitting in a hide all day - yet. A good bag, despite a little bit of ropey shooting. I keep telling everyone that June is the month for pigeons on peas. Yes I use a auto , I had picked most up and dropped out front of the hide before packing and clearing up , I am covered in nettle stings from collecting them ! fenboy
Crikey those peas look poor! Lacking water or are they that badly mauled by pigeons ? Badly eaten by pigeon all along one side , trouble is I have watched that field since the spring and they were just turning up in one flock having a feed then sitting in the orchard until ready for some more , it is only now they are splitting up that I can really do much about them . We use to say that the fishing season( 16th June) used to be the start of the Pigeon season as you would find them on the barley at that time of year, not had peas before to compare . They are a pain when they behave like that, peas seem very unpredictable too.We had no problem last year but they`ve chewed a few this last 3 weeks with us.Perhaps it`s because the plants are being held back by low temperatures. marsh man
Another excellent day fenboy , at this rate you will have to borrow one of P C freezers , he wont mind it will help to keep it in good working order , after all you are showing us how nicely P C would have laid them out .........Not quite as neat as the master but a lot better than I could have done . Did you get a dry afternoon as it started to rain hard just after 2 .30 here , I was watching a field which didn't look that exciting when the first rain drops hit my windscreen , the rain made my mind up to give it a miss and wait for a dryer day . Guest stevo
well done mate ,I had a feeling it would come good in the end , I had a bit of a kick in the nuts yesterday haha , I have been watching 3 fields over the past 3-4 weeks and to be honest the interest shown buy the birds has been very poor , however I left them for a good week , had a drive through yesterday afternoon and there where birds all along the power lines dropping in to the middle , ( on all 3 fields ) problem is the peas have REALLY come on and its a very even crop so there is nowhere to set up and shoot , was looking around for ages trying to find just one spot I could set up , but nowt , so went for a natter with farmer and we both agreed that I could do more damage than the birds , as I explained I don't want to just shoot them and leave them in the peas ( that's not how we roll baby :-) he was fine with it . I just said bell me if its starts to get bad , then I would shoot it , still plenty of other places to look at .
