Benellimelody
My girlfriends car has just failed it's mot and quoted costs from the dealer to rectify seem high but I am not a car expert Requires new rear drums and shoes as brakes binding - £340 Mirror indicator not working - £70 Do these costs look reasonable and what we should expect to pay? Thanks
Harnser
I think you are getting your leg lifted . Get a quote from another garage . It's an easy job to do ,you could do it your self . Harnser
saddler
The part of the sentence "...from the dealer..." shows where you're going wrong Get a quote from a couple of independent garages, or get the Haynes manual & do the work yourself The mirror indicator may even be something as simple as the bulb has blown; for which they want to charge £70! Dougy
No joke I would tell them to swivel. Have done and would do it again Find yourself a good honest independent qualified garage. Did they try fitting a new bulb If they didnt I would certainly tell them to do one.

Benellimelody
Thanks, that's what I thought. Sounded very steep, only went to dealer initially because car under used warranty and mot was £19. I have an independent garage in mind and will get a quote from them. Cheers

Cannon
Not everything is covered under warranty. Brakes generally aren't covered. £410 is taking the biscuit.
wymberley
Not everything is covered under warranty. Brakes generally aren't covered. £410 is taking the biscuit. Yep, agree. But used warranty doesn't last too long and if it's got to a state that it failed MoT within that timescale they weren't too clever when bought. I'd be having words first and if that proved fruitless, then going elsewhere.
Andy H
That price is well ott have a look here for the price of your drum's. http://www.ukoz.co.uk/vw-polo-brake-drums?i=oz-1114-5925776~5337593698

Benellimelody
Under warranty? Yeah, it's an 11 reg with 25k on the clock, bought about 10 months ago (1 year warranty). Obviously wear n tear not covered but price shocked me for the items involved. Knew people here would know if it was over priced and will now b going elsewhere
archiebald
I'd do drums and shoes myself it is an easy job. Shop about I found lupo drums at £19 a pair and £11 for the shoes. A well known garage quoted my girlfriend £340 for her drums and shoes doing. On the quote they where charging £87 per drum! Absolutely discusting. If you arnt mechanically minded there's plenty of guides on utube ect. When Iv done them I took cap off brake reservoir and pushed the wheel cyl seals in don't let them come out or you will need to bleed them. Just swap shoes, springs and drum back on! Take pics with your phone before you start to help you if you get stuck.

Harnser
I am very surprised that the car needs rear drums and pads after only 25,000 miles . Only about 30% of the braking is done on the rear brakes . My last pick up had the front pads renewed at 48,000 miles the first set from new . They checked the rear shoes and they were hardly worn . A much heavier and powerful vehicle than your polo . Harnser
Luckyshot
An 11 reg polo should not need shoes or drums yet, Jack the car up and spin the rear wheels to see if they are actually binding. If so just adjust them or get local garage to do it.
spandit
To change drums you'll need something to get the wheels off, which normally come with the car anyway if you don't have a socket set. You'll then need some pliers to remove the springs that hold the shoes in place - self locking ones are best and you should be able to pick some up for under £10. It's really not a difficult job but remember to take pictures when you take the drums off as the shoes have to go round a specific way which isn't immediately obvious. If they're binding maybe the self adjustment mechanism has jammed in which case you'll need to free it up and carefully lubricate (because you don't want oil going on the brake surfaces)
rovercoupe
Do the newer polos have the adjuster wedge that you have to tap up to get the drum off? that caught me out on the other halfs car wondering why the drum would not come off! ask them what the brake test came through as, it should tell you whats going on. might just need a clean on the inside. jonny thomas
If you've done shoes and drums in at 25000 then there's a problem Did the same dealer service the vehicle over tightening of the handbrake cable which is an easy way of adjusting rear brakes can cause binding
den5008
Rear drums have automatic adjusters on them,so as the shoe's wear down they automatically adjust. For them to wear down that quick you either do a lot of hand brake turns or you don't release the hand brake fully, could be a build up of brake dust.Buy yourself a aerosol can of brake cleaner, chog the front wheels jack up the rear hand brake off, take the drums off and spray the shoes, drums and wheels cylinders, cleaning all the dust a **** out.The fluid drys really fast, refit and test, just a process of elimination. hth atb Den
Livefast123
Rear drums in 25k, they are having a laugh.....unless your Mrs uses the handbrake in normal driving As has been said, if they are binding then it's likely that they just need to be cleaned with brake cleaner. Even Eurocarparts have the bits for around £60 Indicator bulb looks a PITA for a simple part, video here Edited July 5, 2015 by Livefast123
Royboy
I'd love to have a look at them drums to see why there needed 😂. If they are needed I'll show my *** in M&S window !!
HAYBURN
As above 2011 low mileage 25k. at most this requires hand brake cables run back if adjustable.. drum's removed hand brake cables checked to make sure are free, wheel cylinders are free and not leaking. brake shoe leavers are free, adjust shoes, clean drums. readjust hand brake cable.. check drums spin free after both hand brake and foot brake have been apply ed

Careful. 4 years and 25000 miles up and down a rough old farm track will do it.
