Cage traps, it's inches from the end of the barrel !

Shotgun, I'm usually waiting on their routes, so 5-25 yards.

22RF is chance foxes, no more than 50 yards, unless I'm really happy with the placement.

223 I've never needed to go for a shot longer than 85 yards. Bit of a waste zeroing at 100 metres, I suppose !

Ignoring traps, 4 my last 5 have all been with shotgun.

I'd say 25, 15, 10 (a cub), 15 and 40 (22RF on NV) yards, giving a (probable) average of 21 yards.

Personally I don't specifically know, but close(ish).

There have been a number of polls on this subject over the years and it has been clearly shown the vast majority of fox are shot under 100 yards.

I seldom take them past 100 yards and very rarely need to past 200 yards.

Which of course raises some interesting questions re peoples perception of this classic gem "dedicated fox rifle".

:good:

Most of mine in 90-120yd range on grazing land + the odd 25-40yd shot in one small wood that I shoot.

100 then hey.

Roughly @ 125 yds on average, some quite close none over 180yds, mainly with 22 hornet, a couple with the 270 and 1 with a shotgun, Land is mainly Welsh hills and moors around Lancs.

S

Classic range land then but still just over 100!

I doubt you'll find many foxes shot past 300 yards, for the simple reason that you've got to have one hell of a vantage point and be very lucky to see foxes at that distance.

As I've said, a lot of my foxes are taken when I've had a chance to scout out terrain, learn their routes, and then just sit in wait for them. I quite regularly doze off on a nice summer's evening while tucked into a hedgerow, if I've got the sun on me. Usually if that happens I only wake up when the sun is going down and the chill starts to settle on the ground. At which point I give it another 30 minutes, and then give up, coming back out the next day !
