Christmas bonus

That's a good way to look at things :good:

In my last place we used to give everyone £30, not as a bonus simply a Xmas gift at the end of their last shift before the holiday. Some appreciated the gesture, but most grumbled that we were miserable ******* in only giving people £30.

Truthfully we would have had less grief had we given nothing.

 There's just no pleasing some folk. Some years ago we completed on time and within budget the first of two HUUUUGE schools in East Lothian. Times were good back then and we had more work than we could handle, and the two bosses gave bonuses of £1000 each to twelve of us, and the time served joiner who was on the most money ( showed me his monthly pay slip once and he was on £22.00 an hour ) complained because we were taxed on it! He was a conceited, selfish, two-faced, deceitful thieving ***, and I was pleased when he was eventually sacked.

You might be right on EU. However for non res you can't just claim it without scrutiny. I have been non res before when posted overseas and the amount of paperwork you need to provide is immense. You need to document your whereabouts and activities on a daily basis and be prepared to provide evidence of travel in/out of country. Trust me it is hassle. Perhaps HMRC just picked on me.

I think thats because you are a British Subject claiming Non Dom, If you were a foreign passport holder claiming to be non dom it would (it appears) be so much easier to the point that it cam be operated as a scam by many. It would appear on so many levels that the authorities in this country have no idea who is here or what they are doing here.

Haha there are a lot of people like that Scully. I'm doing a bit of work with an Oil & Gas company just now and the folk in that business are seriously well paid, yet some of them are still really greedy. One guy who was on £250k before bonuses, etc was grumbling that he didn't get to keep his old company iPad when he decided to move on and had to buy one for himself

I got £150, same as last year but less than previous years, which is funny as we have had 'our best year ever and are turning work away' according to the MD. We got the standard 'you've all done very well' grace brothers style speech that we get every year, and then told that would be it no more bonus from now on as the company we are merging with don't do bonuses. Someone in the meeting then mentioned the fact that they shut down for two weeks over Christmas with full pay (they are Canadian), so would we be adopting that tradition instead of the bonus....? Funnily enough no we wont be. Still it was fun while it lasted. Back on the overtime next week, gotta keep the boss in foreign holidays and flashy cars.

Place I used to work at bought a large tin of Quality street to share between the workers,

The press operators and maintenance guys refused to take any but the women prep workers managed to see the tin off......

I know it was a gesture, but it was an insult.

Same as when they celebrated a significant anniversary, office staff were given a buffet lunch, shop floor staff got nowt, but one of the stores managers snuck me a Cadburys mini roll.......

I was one of the longest serving employees.......told him where he could stick it......

I bought some lager in for the lads on my site. Also we had a fully paid for Christmas party with about £550 behind the bar for the evening and we had a great time.

As the manager I and the management team are bonused for the year based on how the site is doing and various other targets we are set above our normal day to day work. I don't feel bad about getting this as I am the one who gets hauled over the coals regarding site performance, lost time injuries and in the past have has sleepless nights when the figures haven't been great and you may have to give some lads you have know for a number of years the news that redundancies may be on the cards. We certainly don't get paid it if the site doesn't perform.

I have done my time as one of the lads on the plant for over 10 years and still remember being able to come back from holiday and just being asked how you holiday went rather than being hit by a tide of issues that happened when you were away.

Its easy to bitch sometimes when you are on the coal face and to be honest I have done it myself in the past but the phrase "walk a mile in my shoes" sometimes springs to mind.

I was very lucky this year. My wife and I were taken out by my boss for a Xmas meal and drinks. Fry up at work on Tuesday and a bottle of whiskey with a card in the gift bag , when I opened the card there were 4 £50 notes. I was so shocked as Iv only been back there for 4 months. Means a lot that the company is happy with me.

Same as our place Shaun...they had an office party Tuesday, managment pretending to like people when they've been complete snakes all year....they speak to everyone like **** all year..then expect the office staff to smile and enjoy themselves....the office girls hate it...they had a Buffett with pasties, mince pies etc...wine and a few beers....rest of us,knacker lads and the guys in the plant got 2 bottles of the cheapest wine...chucked mine straight in the incinerator,it's that rank..'it'll tek paint off auld gate'....

Missus works for mole valley farmers and gets £250 in her last pay packet before xmas...(today)

I don't think I've ever received a Christmas bonus. My previous employer (15 years) used to subsidise an office lunch, but the last couple if years they wouldn't pay anything at all. I'm self employed now so I don't have a bonus - but I do have two weeks unpaid holiday, not through choice, but because every other person seems to stop working!

I'm self employed also and don't get paid holidays either. We were all cards in to the bloke we call 'boss' before the 'crisis' but made redundant in the ensuing mess.

We're all self employed now (I was before working full time for him) and work for him when he has work and go elsewhere when he hasn't, but he still treats us to a Christmas 'bash' when we've done a lot of work for him during the year.

I haven't had a holiday this year and enjoy my Christmas holidays, even though they're unpaid. I know many self-employed people who regard Bank holidays in general and Christmas in particular, as an inconvenience. I'm not one of them. I am however, in the fortunate position of being able to work from home on other parts of my business when either he hasn't work for us or I have no painting to do, but I can understand why some are vexed by an enforced break.

But it is easy to lose sight of the wood from the trees. I do it myself occasionally, then reflect that life isn't so bad!

Anyway no Christmas bonus for us, we had the option of a bottle of Champagne or a hamper the size of an infants shoe box - there I go again! It's the thought that counts :good:
