The story below this one, with another fire at the other side of York within a couple of hours shows the seriousness of the cutbacks in the fire services when they had to get engines from Tadcaster and Malton to help out........ and they are talking of cutting back more and using men in vans with extinguishers

Firefighters are overpaid and underworked.

We do not have the same number of fires to day that we did 20 years ago.

We can't afford to have teams of guys sitting in a fire station playing pool so they can go a fight a fire once a week.

say that when your kids are screaming in a burning house and your stood there watching them burn , while somebody else risks there life

+1

I got drafted for the last fire strike

we averaged a car/bin fire every 8 days

cool. so the solution is have them sit at home unpaid until a fire ( because all they deal with is fires, no RTAS no chemical spills, no unsafe structures, no rescues etc ) then call them in. I'm sure no one will moan when it adds 40 mins to them attending.

If I call them out to cut someone from a car ill be sure to say "sorry to ruin your game of pool chaps"

Wow and just wow!!!!!

I have worked with the emergency services and seen first hand the work the fire fighters do and the comment above is just shocking!

Yes the police take the **** and call them water fairys and take the Micky but they deserve every penny they earn from the first hand experience I had with what they deal with.

Hmm, having known fire fighters over many years, some in extremely senior positions, I have to say that from what I could gather, it wasn't terribly busy a lot of the time. I guess though, that entirely depends on where you are stationed.

Whilst their can be no doubting their bravery, and nor should there be any belittling of what other support services they provide, it has to be said that the service does require some lateral thinking in terms of how to run an effective but cost efficient service in the future.

For instance, assuming that we can no longer afford to pay people to do nothing, for the majority of the time, and given that we need more Police, and that we already have specialised Police services, perhaps, just maybe, there may be some mileage in merging the two services, so that you have a smaller core of very specialised staff in stations with the majority on-call providing support services for the community or Police but also specialist and equipped enough to handle spills, car fires and the like without requiring the full call out? Just thinking out loud...

Of course, unions would hate that et cetera...

The only experience we had recently they could not even manage water fairies, the daft ******* ran out of water fighting a car fire!

That said, I for one would not like their job!
