nderfel
I have been trying to use a magnet to good effect for a while now with seemingly no Impact, it just doesn't seem to draw the birds in. I have tried it at at various positions round my pattern but it's just not seeming to work. It's not one location either, I have tried the damned thing on several permissions Any advice? Cheers Nick
ditchman
what decoys have you on the arms ?
Exudate
There are occasions where the magnet will scare the birds, but generally speaking, it tends to help draw them in. As Ditchman says, what decoys to you have on the arms? Personally, I've only really had success with dead birds.
motty
Pigeon magnets are not a magical device that will draw in the pigeons no matter what. They need to be used in the correct place and at the correct time.
nderfel
Thanks gents. I have the a1decoy full bodied ones with the wings than spin. Just thinking, the white bars on the wings on the top or bottom?

nderfel
Top. April 1st? ;-) damn! seen through the initial magnent question was geniune though
Exudate
Thought so! :-) Honestly, give dead birds a go. They really do work far better then artificials. Well, that's what I've found, anyway. The flapping wing versions have never worked well for me on the magnet.
mossy835
i use the foam ones on mine and seem to work,
fenboy
If you are using the spinning wing decoys they are rubbish , replace them with a couple of dead birds .
Outlander
Yep i,m with fenboy on that one, ive got some spinning wing ones that have hung in my garage for many a moon. I use either deads or the silosock ones that seem to work as good as dead birds.
Cosd
The only thing those spinning wing decoys seem to be good at is decoying new pigeon shooters! Use real birds on your magnet. If you need a plastic to start your day off, my recommendation would be a pair of Hyperflaps.
Shotguneddy
If you are using the spinning wing decoys they are rubbish , replace them with a couple of dead birds . +1 dead ones, spinning wing ones r rubbish i use homemade full bodied hypa flaps they work pretty well Edited April 4, 2016 by Shotguneddy
Wilts#Dave
Watched a guy a couple of years back in the exact spot we wanted to be on a field of peas, plenty of traffic but in the hour we watched he didn't shoot a bird.....magnet with spinning wing decoys. He packed up and when he'd gone we set up in the same spot, set out our magnet with two dead birds on and started shooting straight away. Was no coincidence in my opinion and in a couple of hours we shot 40 odd birds.
nderfel
thanks gents - some more decoys for the magnet on the sdhopping list i think
Exudate
No shopping list required - just shoot a couple and pop them onto the magnet. Seriously, don't bother with artificials on the magnet.
Farcombehall
Good advice from most on here but I found real birds are best also make sure sun is not reflecting of any parts as this can put birds off so cover with camo tape or matt paint it
Penelope
And pop them in the freezer when done, for use on the next trip. I keep mine for a while like that until they get too manky to use. No shopping list required - just shoot a couple and pop them onto the magnet. Seriously, don't bother with artificials on the magnet. wymberley
I'm going to be cheeky and pass on a good tip that I got from Fenboy. Angle the birds - 20 - 25 degrees ish - so that they are better seen from passing birds rather than those mainly overhead.

ladyjack
Thanks gents. I have the a1decoy full bodied ones with the wings than spin. Just thinking, the white bars on the wings on the top or bottom? best thing to do with spinning wing decoys is put them on magnate and blast them with shotgun they are rubbish imho
wymberley
when you state angle them 20-25 degrees should they be pointing up or down? No, sideways from the horizontal as an aircraft when it rolls. If you're minded, set the rotary going with them horizontal and walk off some 100 yards and look back. Repeat with them angled and you'll soon see the advantage. One point, dependent upon your set-up, you might just have to firmly nip the securing screw as at speed they can tend to return to the horizontal. Thanks again, Fenboy. We setup in the exact same spot as he drove away, and had watched pigeons avoiding his decoys for the hour previous, as I said before. We tried the spinning wing type on several occasions and found them to be pretty pants! Lucky Shot 1958
I used the spinning wing type last year over peas and they worked fine bringing in plenty of birds but on another day the do not seem to work at all, just depends on the day imo.
