Has anyone recently insured their teenager for car insurance ?

I'm getting some crazy quotes over £3k to insure a Peugeot 206 worth £500 !!!

My daughter is17 and just passed, I was expecting to pay ,but not have my pants pulled down as well ,

If anyone has recently insured there young un, who have you used ?

Shaun

I know people are going to say kids/new drivers are a high risk but so are the old or even worse the middle aged know it all complacent.Just unfair for the young ones its just robbery no other words for it.Whats changed? when i was 17 i wasnt paying stupid monies for insurance.

There should be a better system with set insurance fees.Say when someone passes their test they can only drive say 1ltr.If they behave they can move up after a period of time. But on the other hand if someone has loads of experiance and drives like a tit then force them down plus points from a say a 2lt to a 1.4.If they behave and after the points are cleared they can move back up to 2 ltr.Might make people drive more carfully.

Agree with this and I think they shouldn't be able to modify the engine or performance of the car, or maybe fitted with a speed limiter until they're more experienced behind the wheel.

I am afraid it's possibly down to the statistics of accidents and who would know better than the insurance business what category have the most.fair or not I suppose you can't argue with the numbers

Agree but maybe the statistics would come down if drivers knew they would have to drive that scooby carfully or end up driving a Corsa for 5 yrs.

Another factor could be that cars of years ago were nothing like today when I was first driving I don't think there was a car that would do 100 mph but today's small engines are more than capable.and as they say boys will be boys.we all like to think our children are the exception to the rule but in all honesty they are all pretty much the same.

Its a rip off but that's the way it is, what can you do?

choose your car very carefully is one factor

black boxes are another

you say she is 17, when is she 18?

A massive excess brings down the premium if you are prepared to accept the risk

Shop around on comparison sites

Nail on the head mate,my wife has a brand new Fiesta Titanium X eco boost standard its 125bhp but only 1ltr.Its just come back from ford last week where its had Mountune re map and tuning upgrade to 202bhp.0-60mph is now around 6 seconds from 9sec.The fiesta ST is only 198bhp.Shes a carfull driver though lol, honest.Shes a 49yr old petrol head.

My Jimny does 0-60 in just under 6 month.

I might get slated for this comment but I'm a relatively young driver, iv even had a couple of claims, but iv never paid anything like £3000. If you look at go compare, compare the market and money supermaket you can easily half that. Additionally if you spend a bit of time with independents you can often get it cheaper, stuart and co in Cambridgeshire were excellent.

I am honestly perplexed when others say to me they cant get it any cheaper than £2500-£3000.

Are you sure of those numbers - that (bhp) sounds very unlikely to me with a remap on that car.

It also depends massively on what car it is - I did insurance quote checks on a number of different cars before we bought one for my daughter - the Ford Ka came out cheapest. Depending on what is the "cool" car at the time affects insurance massively. Older Clio's are way more expensive than newer ones for example. I just looked round comparison sites.

My lad is 18 with 1 years no claims and insures 4 cars all without Black Boxes

Jaguar X Type 2.5 V6 AWD - £1400 (Auto Net Insurance)

MGTF 160 (All mods declared) - £1500 (A Plan)

1969 VW Beetle (Classic Insurance) £750 (Lancaster)

Vauxhall Vivaro 1.9 Van (commercial Insurance) - £1400 (Autonet Insurance)

I also have him on my Caterham including Track Day and Hill Climb - £850 (Footman James)

All in his own name with me and the mrs on the policy. Spent ages looking for deals and these were the best we could find.

ring admiral, move yourself and family to multicar, play with excesses, have done my 'kids' for last 5-6 years and they have been v good. Each renewal you will need to play the phone up game.....but each person starts earning own no claims,be honest about who main user of each car but put yourself/ves on all cars too.......saved us a lot ompared to compariosn sites over last few years.....ie 18 yr old son peugeot 106 £620 1st year..other on a clio £720 1st year.......it was @ £1000 per child per annum cheaper than market.
