Gordon R
Hamster - oddly enough, I never liked the brown case Victory (probably the awful beige colour), but loved the red case 8s. I was given a box of the yellow skeet shells, at Hesketh Bank shooting club - no longer open, by the importer. He called himself "Nick the Greek". He asked me to try them and tell others if I liked them. If I didn't, he asked me to tell him. They went through a Remington 1100 faultlessly. fortune
it's surprising how many of us have got all of these old cartridges still horded up. I've got a box of those Eley magnums, a box of impax, A box of Alphamax and loads of odds and end such as the all plastic Rottweil mk2 that came in a carboard suitcase style box in which there were 200. I've still got one of those filled up with other cartridges. The odd red ,pink and black records several boxes of Winchester GB an amount of the westerns. When I was a kid about the only cartridges that were available were the Eley grand prix in various bores and the fourteen and fourlong. there were a few ironmonger specials about but they were a bit few and far between. it's like how many people have still got 80 & 82 left. There were Dan arms, Gevalot. trying to remember more makes that have disappeared
matone
For any old timers living in the North-East most will remember the 12 bore cartridge supplied by Ward Thompson of Stockton called the [Oakleaf] I can remember purchasing these in boxes containing 100 they were a good trap cartridge. Also another supplier was Elton Stores of Darlington who sold 4 types of 12 bore cartidge know has the Competition, , The Pest Control, The Standard, and Trap shooting , these cartridges had the union jack on the case and were loaded with Greenbat smokeless powder from Greenwood & Batley of Leeds hence the name.To this day I still load this powder if I can get any because it is a bulk powder and can be measured in drms. Feltwad Did Elton Stores load themselves or just retail the cartridges ? I have a few Pest Control version. it's surprising how many of us have got all of these old cartridges still horded up. Gordon R
I had a few thousand "Nike" in the 1980s, from Pennine Shooting Centre at Rochdale - which were not made by the sports company. Nitrokemia actually produced these - from one of the old Soviet states - obviously never heard of trademark. snarepeg
Got thousands of bird scaring cartridges from the local RAF , supposed to be past their sell by date so for disposal. The Sgt. in charge disposed of them to me, stripped the innards out and reloaded the case. Friend shot one thru his Eldekin S/s and it stuck in the choke and blew the barrels, shot it at 24.5 inches there after. Have still got some pre ww1 Schulz powder, and it shoots quite nice still. Gordon, Likewise, I had by then already been pretty much converted onto 8's but admit the 7.5's definitely seemed to lack the awesomeness of the 8's, in fact I will never forget a days decoying on drilled peas when shot after shot with the beige jobbies would give random kills needing second barrels but whatever else it was I was using killed well (the birds were nothing special). Another time a mate and I ended up flighting birds all day stood in the field as the snow meant they couldn't see the decoys and they couldn't see us either as long as we were a few yards away from cover ! Anyway, all day the beige cases would fail to make decent kills on 30 yard high birds, this coming from a confirmed believer in 7.5 on pigeon with most clay shells. To give you an idea of how long ago this was, the fields were accessed via guarded gates where we showed ID cards while they were building the channel tunnel ! Gordon R
If I had to say which cartridge I used through the 1980s, my first reaction would have been to say Eley Olympics - I shot a lot of them. This thread started me thinking of the different brands I used - only in the 1980s:- Fiocchi, Maionchi, Record, Rottweil, Eley Olympics, Victory, Winchester Trap 100s, Winchester Trap 200s, SMI, Nike, Sellier and Bellot, Remington Peters and Gamebore. There are probably more, but it means that I didn't really stick to one brand, despite my gut reaction.
demonwolf444
Only one. Hull Imperial Game. Not exactly old, but a favorite i have been using for five years or so. Never looked back. The 26 gram load is cartridge perfection.

I am of the opinion you need to think again, When remington moved from bridgeport in late 1970 they produced about two years more peters associated ammo, ceretainly not anywhere near the 1980s. The arkansa plant produced very few remington peters cartridges. Could have been very old i guess or is that just you. ?

fat_jay
Can anyone remember the "Gold Classics" which had photos of topless girls on the boxes? Shot at North Devon last year and they had a box on the wall, reminded me of when I worked in a gun shop on Saturday mornings when I was still at school.......never shot them, but they were by far my favorite cartridge! Hamster
I also remember using thousands of Victory Leader shells which were their club offering but rather good. Also shot Kent Champions for many years, right up to when they sold up in fact.
