SimpleSimon
My XTrail engine light has been on for some time, relating to the EGR valve which I've been merrily ignoring because it seemed to be having zero impact on the performance of the vehicle aside from disabling the cruise control (which I would use maybe once a month) and hill descent control which I might use once a year... But then recently I put my foot down in 3rd gear and instead of a reassuring surge of torque as the turbo spun up, I got just enough poke to outrun the elderly gentleman cyclist I was attempting to pass. My car had gone into "limp mode" and I can tell you limp is putting it mildly. This is full blown impotence! So I figure two of the tyres are close to worn so I may as well replace all 4 with some all terrains. And it could do with a service and some TLC as I've had it for a year. £903, plus whatever it costs to fix the cause of my limpness. Good job I know the wife's credit card PIN... So, let's hear your costly motoring woes of the year, make me feel better...
archiebald
Snapped timing belt, repair cost 46 quid. Also clutch went - that cost 55 quid. Sounds like you need an old land rover without electrics!
Rupert
Rear went pop yesterday in buxton, £215 ,plus side the runflat got me back to Cleckheaton. Crashed my RC heli and shards of my new carbon fiber rotors pierced the hood of a new 3 series cab parked in my practice area, owner was watching. £2400 Crashed my van into my car, its was snowy. Sounds like you need an old land rover without electrics! I'd love an old landrover. In theory. In fact, before we were married the wife had one (her dad's actually, which he still owns). Used to get her to uni and back every other weekend and out to various sites for field trips and the like. In terms of basic "does the car start and drive" reliability it was excellent. But the door seals leaked in heavy rain, the heater was useless to the extent that your breath would condense on the windscreen and then freeze. Weekly a bulb or fuse would blow. The tyres would take it in turns to go flat for no reason. The stereo broke, but you couldn't tell because the engine was so noisy. The seats were uncomfortable and once the exhaust fell off. I liked it in spite of all its flaws, bit was great fun, but it wouldn't suit me as a daily drive.
casts_by_fly
I scraped a porche fender with my front bumper swinging into a parking space last month. Didn't cost me anything now, but at renewal time I'll let you know. Also had some brakes issues with my last MOT. New discs, pads, a caliper, and hand brake pads. Apparently it was pretty rough to get apart. All in (plus the MOT that spawned the inquiry) was £900. At least it drives like new now. rick

39TDS
I don't really want to think what i have spent repairing my Xtrail but it has definitely been the worst car I have ever owned for needing repairs. Last one was new front lower arm plus new front discs and wheel bearing. (discs were about 3 moths old but had warped probably due to bearing and arm being knacked) Think that bill was just shy of £400. Latest issue is it needs a new battery. Jason_ox
I crashed the works vehicle last month found out last week it's a write off and my personal cars insurance is due this week,so phoned my insurance company up to ask whether it'll have an impact. Of course it does. £450 up from £325 last year because I'm more of a risk. Wife's car central locking went up the shoot this morning and my car is saying it needs new brake pads on the rear. And still all the Christmas stuff to buy! 😡

Mine had new front discs for the MOT (fair play, they were at the end of their life) and also new front arms on both sides. This was in October and cost about 500 quid all in... So in about 13 months of ownership I'll have spent in excess of 1500 on the car. In fairness I paid about a grand below market value for it, so I can't moan too much, as long as nothing else goes wrong any time soon! 39TDS
I have had 5 front wheel bearings, 2 new sets of front discs, 2 new front calipers, 2 new wishbones, 3 driveshafts, timing chain and tensioners etc, something else major in the engine that I can't even remember what it was (valves I think) and no doubt more that I have forgotten. Not added it up but I paide £2500 for it and have spent about the same on repairs. Just a constant stream of stuff. I do like the car and when it's not needing repairing it is good. I usually say I am going to sell it while it is all in order and summat else goes before i get around to it. Then again I wonder if I've fixed everything now so should keep it. Wouldn't be so bad if I did loads of miles in it but I bet it is hardly 5,000 a year.
shaun4860
I've had 2 03 plate, needed an MAF Filter and that was it, did approx 30k in the time I owned it 07 plate, Front wheel bearing just after warranty had gone and an intermittent miss that never did it while it was being investigated, never shown up any fault codes, did about 7-8k in that one but got rid as the "miss" spoilt it for me although it was very infrequent.... Looked into getting another 03 one (less complicated) until I saw what the road tax was, £290, only do 4-5k a year so changed my mind To me the 03 one was the better car
oowee
I bought a brand new out Alfa 147 specially painted which I hated so I sold it 4 moths later to loose £6000 to buy a new Anniversay Golf GTI which was boring so I sold it 4 months later to loose £4000 and bought a vx 220 which was mmmmmmm so I kept that

guzzicat
Not cost wise but frustrating, drove into Aberdeen airport in wife,s Passat, missed turning & ended in wrong lane, had to pay 2£ to raise barrier, lowered window & put coins in hopper, screen showed" coin not accepted", NO RETURNED COIN SLOT!!! put another coin in & raised barrier, pressed window button ,window got half way back up & then dropped to bottom, got to long stay car park (open air) & could not raise window, had to leave to catch flight to London, car stood like that over weekend,a bit damp when we got back, but The Jersey Boys show was worth it! shaun4860
Mine is an 03 You will get good or bad examples of any car I'm afraid but I was on about for actually using it not reliability wise, the 03 was a lot better on fuel (112bhp as opposed to 136bhp on the 07) and I never really liked the leather seats

I like the car when it doesn't need fixing. If I was going to get rid of it now (winter) would be a good time but no sudden plans to sell it. Probably the tidiest car I have had for decades but just so troublesome. Luck of the draw and have to say I am usually luckier than this. rovercoupe
The gf, crashed camper 3 days before going on holiday in said van, month later back box falls off and takes rear bumper with it then on the daily driver the water pump guide snaps off causing the belt to jump and mashed the valves, sourced spare engine and fited it to find out its the wrong size so rebuilt original head and refitted original engine. Also welded some sill plates on camper as its starting to rust away! Me I did a bit of welding on the sills on mine.
