digger
Random one but.. I've used a straight claw Estwing hammer for many years ( the leather handle version ). I watch it like a hawk as they have a tendency to wander. my mate always admires it so I'm going to buy him one as a thank you for his huge help this year. Rather than just say "here's an ammer mate" I'd like to get the shaft engraved. The steel is extremely hard so therein lies the question - would it be a job for a local engraver or a specialist ? figgy
Acid or laser, will work but have a look at the type of finish you want to what you think is better. Be careful to as it will void the warranty. Edited December 15, 2016 by figgy

fortune
If your mate longs for your hammer why hasn't he got his own to use as a working tool ? Why not give him yours and buy yourself a new one and have your name engraved on it. if they go missing that easy he will loose his new one and you will still have an old one. PS I know that you know and feel the tool that you have got and a new one don't feel the same.
digger
Thanks for the responses and advice. He has a hammer but just a standard rubber handled think. It swings like a not very swingy thing. I'd give him mine but it's broken in nicely and a new one would sit wrong in my hand

Walker570
Letraset sticky rub on letter then mask the area you don't want etched ... cutting an oval out of some gaffer tape with the letterset inside so the etc will leave the name shiny. You can then use a mild acid , or even vinegar but the best way is to submerge the material(hammer) in strong salt water and using a battery charger, electro etch it. Beware anything metal not covered will get etched. I spray my knife blades with varnish or use nail polish. With care, it makes a very tidy job. Various ideas on you tube by the way.
