28" or 30" game gun...

30" barrels would be the popular choice, steadier swing I those longer birds and better resale value as a rule. However I've still got my first 12 bore that has 28" inch barrels and find I can still shoot equally well with that as I do with my 30" beretta 682 gold e, on the odd occasion I take it out.

28" for me as well, really don't like the feel of a 30".

Also don't buy into the 30" better resale either, logic would say that there would be about the same ratio of people looking for certain lengths than there are for sale as people trade in when buying new, unless something fairly radical happens to make a lot of people suddenly want to swap to a longer or shorter gun, it's similar with left or right hand guns, you rarely see decent left handed guns sit on a gun rack for ages waiting to be sold as they get snapped up, but you can have a pretty limitless choice on right handed guns which sit collecting dust.

This; I much prefer a 28" gun, and am at some point having a 32" Gamba chopped to 28" and then its Teague chokes refitted.

I bought a b725 with 30 inch barral

A great gun but I could not shoot it fired all over and found it too long.i am 6foot4

I traded it in for a UK stocked b725 with 28 inch barrals ..chalk and cheese now I hardley ever miss .for me it feels so much better not as cumbersome lighter and fits better.also lighter and I find a better swing the stock shape and length making a significant difference ..would I go back to 30inch and normal stock..not even for a free grade 5 gun.

The shorter gun and stock suits me better and it's better for aiming straight onto running game.very quick to come up...and no complaints in a hide or wondering the fields

Thanks

I have both 28" and 30" in both s/s and o/u. Since you are interested in o/u, I started with a 28" Beretta S 57 EL (which I still have) - after some years I had some spare cash and decided I'd like an SO Beretta - and bought (and had fitted) a 30" SO6 (which I also still have). I have shot well with it (for me anyway and it has walked many miles on walked up grouse with me), but as I have aged it began to feel heavy (especially for walked up days) and cumbersome and I have gone back to 28" (in the form of a Merkel which has 'faster' handling) which is also a little lighter. Which would I buy again? I'd go now go 28" for preference.

Putting this in perspective, my live quarry shooting nowadays is normally done with a s/s - and again 28" is preferred for fast handling and light carrying.

Thanks for that John...

I've got my eye on a Beretta 690 game.. I'm fancying the 28" ... handling the 28" in the shop feels right (the swing, weight)

Then I get guys saying you need a 30" or a 32" for the high birds ..

My preference is improved cylinder and modified chokes 1/4 and half which is 30 and 40 yards no matter what barrel length. a shotgun barral has very little if any effect on power.. unlike a rifle where the barral length has a massive effect on fps and distance.

The shorter barral means I can bring the barral up quicker and the uk stocked b725 feels and fits me better than the pistol gripped stock. So I fire it more accuratly

If the 28 feels better it probably is .I got my longer barral gun as that's what the lads said 30 is the best...I bought it and found it was not for me.so got the gun that felt right at the start..in the shop if it fits and feels good that is the gun for you..it's like harry potter and his wand..the wand (shotgun) chooses you....if it feels right it is right..going by the trend cost me £600 and another £500 in cartridges. Before I admitted I got it wrong Edited by psycho

Ignore them. 28"'s used to be fine before the trend for longer barrels came about with the rising popularity of clay shooting, and longer than the old game guns were and I doubt birds were flying much lower back then.

There is an argument that for very high birds, long barrels have the advantage. I don't have personal experience of this type of shooting, but a friend (for whose views I have great respect) holds this view; however he has shot on some of the rather specialist Devon shoots where birds are actually very high. In my (40 years) experience, by far the vast majority of shots are taken at 'normal' (i.e. sub 40 yards) ranges.

I remain convinced that at these ranges, the best gun is the one with which you feel most comfortable and in which you have confidence.

I also believe that if you have the skill and experience (and opportunity) to take on the really high birds (and it does need both to be successful), you will know what gun (and choke/cartridge combination) you would feel confident with on those specialist targets.

Go for what 'feels right' for you, not what someone else thinks they need, and not based on some possible future trade in value.
