johnnytheboy
Does anyone know any shops that will do a proper job of gun fitting, setting up a try gun, using the pattern plate then getting a new gun set up from the try gun dimensions? I had a wee lesson the other day and was kinda shocked to be told that my gun didn't fit worth a sook, which has really made me think that if this is worth doing then it's worth spending some cash on

Junkyard Dog
I make stocks, am based in Cumbria, do lots of fitting and alterations and mtm custom stocks. If you like I can talk you through what I offer and do. One thing I do, is make an undersize stock for your gun, then when we meet I build up and alter this stock until it is a perfect fit, using pattern plate and shooting it. This is done and tweeeked until exactly as you want, then from this I can make an exact copy of this stock from a blank of your choice, then its a case of shoot it in the white, then if all good it gets finished and mailed to you unless you want to collect. McSpredder
I had a wee lesson the other day and was kinda shocked to be told that my gun didn't fit worth a sook..... Did you get a clear explanation of what is wrong with your existing stock? Length, comb height, cast, pitch, etc? Presumably the instructor would have put a slip-on pad onto the stock if it was too short, or a temporary comb-raiser if it was too low, or offered a different gun for you to try if your own stock was seriously over-long or over-high. I don't claim any expertise in gun-fitting, but the procedure that Junkyard Dog has described in post #9 sounds entirely logical.

rimfire4969
Not wanting to hijack the thread but I have purchased a delux stock and forend for my gun, I would like someone down this way in Cornwall to fit it to me and the gun. I cant find anyone down here who can offer me the fitting with pattern plates etc. and to do the adjustments to the stock. Any ideas anyone? Very few people are gun fitters (normally instructors trained to fit guns) and also gunsmiths. Your probably looking for 2 people or a company. Yes he had an adjustable comb gun, he got me to mount my gun and checked my eye position, it was below the rib, he explained that's why I was wrongly told before I was left eye dominant as all that was happening was my right eye being below the rib and my left eye was taking over. We then set about adjusting and mounting the gun until it was what he thought was satisfactory, we then went out and shot some clays which was eye opening as I shot better than I had for a long time! wymberley
It would be well worth the trip imho. You should manage it in a day particularly if you were to arrange a meet with Dennis (if you haven't twigged, we're talking UK Gun Repairs) for late AM. It's about 40 minutes from the Exeter services on the M5 - out in the sticks but very easy to find. So, +
Bungle The Bear
Andy Coull in Auchterhouse is your man - he sorted me out and cast off the stock altered the heel and lifted the comb on my SxS. Highly recommended, and a little bit closer to home !!!
