oldypigeonpopper
Plenty of nice Damascus barrelled SxS Hammerguns out there if you keep an eye out - bought a v.nice Lincoln Jeffries "Lightweight" 12G dated approx. 1885 for under £300 a couple of months back. Truly beautiful gun to shoot and really is light as a feather - Damascus is stunning and the quality is amazing - gun looks about 20 years old. hello, that sounds a very good buy bruno,

Vince Green
Its not just guns that the market is stagnant for selling. My mate is trying to sell a boat at the moment and keeps dropping the price but getting no takers. When money gets a bit tight the non essencials are the first to go. Red-dot
.....totally agree, the market is dead but wont lie down. Stuff that had a pedigree flew off the shelf ten years ago now suffers from rack rash.
Penelope
At 49 years of age, SxS's are all have used. AyA No.4 20, AyA No.4 12, Kestrel 3" Mag.12, D.H. Wallace 12 and Midland 3" mag.12. The last two being my current guns and there is the possibility of a AyA Matador 10, soon too. I fully agree with you both , well I would, as I have only shot with a s x s for over half a century and I tell yer the truth , I couldn't care two monkeys what people think , I am the one using it , and I am not likely to change now . As a small instance , this morning me and my brother got invited to a clay shoot and b b q on the shoot we both help on in the winter , he is 73 and I am nearly 70 and both of us use a s x s, we both shot a round of what you would class as sporting , I am not saying we hit them all and came top because we didn't but we both held our own and shot as well as all the ones using o / u . When it was over and we were enjoying a bacon roll , several of the guns asked us if we minded if they looked at what we were using and then the punch line , would we mind if they had a shot or two , certainly not , go ahead and help yourself , afterwards some said they were like drain pipes and how on earth did we hit anything and others said they enjoyed using them and as they were cheap they would seriously think about buying one . So although we will never be converted to a o / u now at our age , we might well had converted one or two to a s x s , lets hope so and I bet they wont regret it. Penelope
Get a hand guard. I use one all of the time on my SxS's. I brought what must have been a rolls Royce of SxS from wrabbitbasher as it cost me the sum of£75.00 quite a lot for his guns I think Anyway a nice tight gun maybe a bit stiff to open , but shoots a dream only problem in sporting the barrels get a bit hot I would love a Damascus SxS

My mate is trying to sell a boat at the moment and keeps dropping the price but getting no takers. When money gets a bit tight the non essencials are the first to go. Boats are notoriously difficult to move on, I had three in nine years berthed on lake Windermere. I was lucky that i moved them on quite quickly but some were for sale for years. In fact there is a boat I know still for sale after ten years 😞 As for things in general, I think nothing is selling well and few businesses are making much money. The whole country is on its knees or very close to.
Vince Green
It works both ways though, you can get some stonking good deals on second hand cars at the moment. I predict a slump in house prices too because a lot of ex- buy to let properties are coming on the market due to changes in the tax laws. Wingman
This is why I think a forum section for members to swap or trade guns (rather than sell for cash) would be a good idea.. As an example I have a near mint Browning Auto-5 that I would consider swapping for a newer auto, trade in value at a dealer is frankly pathetic (trust me I have tried) so a swap would be a better option.... wymberley
I'm very possibly not the bloke to comment as I'm not much more than quietly doing my own thing in my little neck of the woods. However, in view of the bank of England's 'amber warning' a day or so back regarding the dangers of borrowing/lending at the current levels, it would indicate that people are spending - possibly too much. In shooting we have a finite asset which is actually diminishing - land. Is it not possibly the case that it is the interest in our sport that is also diminishing? If the posting rate on PW is any indication - compared to when I first started - one could easily get the impression that we've got to the summit and are now on the way down the other side. Red-dot
I read that 58% of UK residents are only two months away from poverty and 15% have no money never mind savings. I have a gun for sale at £9,000 and im not holding my breath.
ips
I have about 20k (rrp) tied up in my gunroom, I always thought if nothing else they were an investment and an assert but now I am not so sure if there is still a market for high (ish) end guns. I know one thing I don't intend to spend any more money on guns or anything else.

Around the London area rifle clubs are slowly but steadily losing their ranges because most do not own the freehold. When leases fall due the developers are able to out bid them. JRDS
Well I must be mad I have just bought a 1947 AYA Pigeon Gun from Holts, been after a Pigeon Gun for a while ideally English but after seeing this couldn't resist. Good quality SBS were making strong money many well over top estimates. They have a sealed bid auction on at the moment (July closing bids) I think for a lot of the cheaper stuff that didn't sell is on there to get rid and if they go for round their estimates there are some absolute bargains. Well worth taking a look on their website, they are a very good outfit to deal with.

JRDS
Don't have it yet, it's being shipped to a local RFD for collection and hasn't landed. It will need some work on the stock too, a little low and the wrong cast for me if the measurements were accurate.
