Moley1508
hi all I have narrowed down my choice to 2. freelander TD4 or a Dacia Duster at my budget I know I would be getting a trade off between the age and higher miles on a Freelander vs less miles possibly a 2013 plated basic Duster. I have a family so need to be able to use it to get to the airport, holiday in the uk etc with all the paraphernalia that travels with us. 2 child car seats but possibly needing 3. from an off road perspective it will be soft, nothing extreme and done slowly, no time trial expectations here! I have owned 90's and heavily modded discos before and so and nervous of any issues that may come with the freelander opinion and help would be much appreciated. thanks in advance,
ferguson_tom
We had a TD4 freelander and really liked it, ours had a few issues but sorted out by car dealer we got it from. The HSE was a rally comfy place to be. I have been in a mates dacia and it's not comparable with the freelander however it is a lot of car for your money, he has had it from new since they first come out and it's put up with abuse from a family of 5 with no problems. Personally though I wouldn't have either, I would probably choose a kia sorento.
al4x
You'll also get a decent rav 4 for that money, I'd have one over that price freelander any day

Red-dot
FL2's are reliable as any Jap motor. Tailgate handles fail and front wheel bearings are soft. Other than that go for the newest one you can afford.
philm
Freelander all the way, had freelander one and two. All cars get faults, I had very little problems with both mine, alternator was the worst.

jam1e
hello, nissan Xtrail ? +1. Had 1 for 6 months now. Great bit of kit. I've put some major off road bias tyres on it, which makes it a tad noisey at speed. But it's better off road, so it's a trade off... At 5k you should get the newer model than my 55 plate. Which has a lot more power, although i'm very happy with my 136bhp diesel model...

johnnytheboy
Watch out with dusters for rust, some were recalled and had allot done to them
four-wheel-drive
I think that I would go with the freelander TD4 for no other reason than I like the look of them and people do say that the later Freelanders are much better than the older ones. A1Decoy
I have a Freelander 2 TD4.. Excellent vehicle, in between a car and a 4x4 IMO but great off road as well. I get 40 mpg out of her and probably the nicest car I've ever driven, very smooth and has the 'car feel' but lots of space inside, also has a nice bit of power if you need it. Not a typical clumpy 4x4 feel. They are expensive to maintain as you have to keep them up together or your get problems. Took her to a well known garage a few weeks ago to collect a part for a friend and the bloke said the FL2 is the most reliable Land Rover in his opinion as he doesn't seem to get many with major problems just minor stuff - he said stay clear of the Discovery 3's.. I have to say though, my dad has a Honda CRV 2L Petrol, hes had a few of them and he wouldn't get anything else. They go on for years! Its entirely your choice.. I got the FL2 as the 2t towing limit compared to the CRV has 1.5t and need to use her to tow, If i didn't I may of gone for the CRV, both very similar size on inside space but the FL2 has much comfier seats (if that matters ha ha) Aimee @ A1 Edited June 29, 2017 by A1Decoy
ferguson_tom
I have to say though, my dad has a Honda CRV 2L Petrol, hes had a few of them and he wouldn't get anything else. They go on for years! Its entirely your choice.. My step mum had a year 2000 2.0 petrol she bought it with around 100k on the clock and ended up putting another 80,000 on over 6-7 years. In that time all it cost them was consumables and a front wheel bearing and for a car with 180k on the clock it still drove exceptionally well. Only went because she got offered a salary sacrifice deal which was too good to miss.
