Depends what you mean by cheap, can you still get cheap cartridges?

28 or 30 gram cartridge of 6-71/2 shot will kill most things within range.

Most of the Lyalvale Express or Gamebore cartridges will do the job, the last lot I brought were Lyalvale Express, ENGLISH SPORTER 28 gram 7.5, I was pleasantly surprised at how good they were on crows and pigeons.

£190 plaswad or £198 feltwad, (just cartridges) you may find them cheaper if you shop around.

I've got a bit of a thing for rc at the minute. I have found The fibre 32g romagnola hit like trains and have brought testing birds down with ease.

The rc 2 also very good too.

Pigeon power again are good and being red are easy to find if you have a semi. Not a fan of the special pigeon however ive not tried the new ones.

Others will swear hy superfast.

As has been said above,  anything from size 7 and 28g up will do the job.

If you are decoying within 45 yards, Gamebore White Gold or Black Gold 28g in fibre 7.5 (2.4mm No 7 UK) will drop them.

If you are looking to go out a bit further for flighting with tighter chokes the Pigeon Extreme in No 5 (2.8mm) will also work at a cost.

All are 70mm and will cycle  an auto and not too short for a 76mm chamber.

I have wanted to try for

sometime but not seen in Shropshire.

Just cartridges. Think there about £ 190 a thou off the top of my head. Plus £ 15 next day delivery.

Ok when I was a lot younger (long time ago) I had it in my head that the bigger the load the more I would kill, I soon learnt the errors of my ways by an old professional pigeon shooter (now dead) all he ever used was Eley Impact 1oz and Eley grand prix 1.1/16, 6s (old paper case) shot from a Cogswell & Harrison boxlock pigeon gun, I watched in amazement as he killed pigeons out to 50 and 60 yards and very rarely missed, he was an extremely good shot on high pheasants and partridge with the same cartridges.

Watching him kill those high birds proved to me that 30 grams of 6s placed correctly will kill as many birds as 34/36 grams of 4s or 5s at 50 and 60 yards, I have not used a load heavier than 30 grams of 6s or 7.5s for many years now and I have killed a few pigeons and black’uns over the years.

Going back to your comment on your friends using cheap cartridges, fairly recently I used a few boxes of NSI uno prima 28 grams 7.5, that someone gave me, it stemmed from someone on this forum recommending them, now they are what I would call cheap compared to what’s on the market, I was that impressed with them I will be ordering a thousand when my stock of cartridges gets low, cheap does not mean bad, mind you I think cartridges are bloody expensive any way.

NSI uno prima…..http://centralguns.co.uk/nobel-sport-italia-nsi/45-nsi-uno-prima.html#/25-wad-plastic/38-shot_size-75/49-load_gms-28_gms/46-quantity-1000

A week or so ago I was running low and used a few of these in size 8 (uk 7.5) at decoyed pigeon. Within 35 yards they folded up nicely. Out to 40 or maybe 45 I had the odd runner howevr my chokes were quite open.

Cost £160 a thou from the local clay club.

I' prefer size 6 rc something or other but the 7.5 did the job.

As you most probably know NSI 7.5 are I think English 7s, I would not like to go much smaller than this, although it as been debated a lot on this forum, is it better to have multiple strikes with smaller shot (denser pattern) at 40 yards or fewer strikes with larger shot?

Yep. The 8's I was using are (I think) uk 7.5. They did perfectly well out to reasonable ranges.

My preferences is 6 or even 5.5 . I can't see a reason to go larger as the pattern will fail long before the power.

A uk 7 is good to 40 yards.  28g is a good size load.

There' no need to fire larger that 5.5 or 32g however variety is the spice of life and I'm sure someone will be along to correct me

However the rc brand are very good and you won' go far wrong with them.

In the only days we used to put empties in the gun and shout bang!

Not even any shot in the cartridge and we still hit 100,000 birds in a session. Not one of them was within 100yards, but now times change.

I wish you guys would stop talking about half shotsizes, but i hear now there are .75 increments of shotsizes. It's nonsense. If you want a cheap decoy load, just shoot 7.5s maybe choked up. As an aside 6s and 32g is a traditional load, maybe even more than 30yarders. eley impax are no magical shell.

Another vote for fiocchi. I have used quite a few different carts in the last year - eley special pigeon, gamebore super game and clear pigeon, hull super fast. But the pigeon 32 and pl30 (both 6s) I am currently working my way through are my favourites. They are a bit dirty though. Cheap too, I paid £180 for 1000 pl30s.
