Actually, perhaps not surprisingly, it comes harder to the older, the overweight and those with existing medical conditions. However, less expected is that it seems worse in other parts of the community such as BAME, but some groups (e.g. Chinese) seem to be less vulnerable. JohnfromUK
A figure I found surprising was that 18.1 Million people entered the UK in the 3 months prior to lockdown. At over a quarter of the UK population, I find that a staggeringly large number. A tiny fraction were quarantined. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/05/just-273-people-arriving-in-uk-in-run-up-to-lockdown-quarantined

Mungler
Every NZ comparison I’ve seen is BS. NZ with it population of 5m (less than Scotland) and land mass 10% bigger than the whole UK. And their PM taking a 15% pay cut and the media crowing that Borrow should do likewise - their PM earns £100k more than Boris for ‘managing’ a country with about 65 million less people in it. As for the European stats - anyone who believes them is frankly a moron and that’s not even getting on the subject of measuring like with like and the easy example is Italy not recording deaths in care homes. We are where we are and we’re on our own; take neither comfort nor annoyance from what you think you are seeing elsewhere.
Raja Clavata
Are you suggesting Boris represents good VFM? Anyway I agree - would much rather be discussing the future and what the new norm is gonna look like - I reckon it'll all work out fine and dandy in the big scheme of things, eventually... clangerman
the numbers mean nothing because if we don’t get on top of it the rest of the world will simply cut us of until the number dying does drop no way are they going to put up with us handing out the virus when they are clear
Mungler
So, here’s an interesting one; in March 2020 there were 5,777 more deaths registered in England and Wales than in 2019. Obviously no one wants to be one of the 5,777 (and the stats show that of that number 80% plus were over 75 years of age) but that’s still not a big number / difference given that we’ve got a growing population (between 65m and 70m depending on who you ask). I can’t work out the truth of any of it. The only person I know to have had it is my retired plumber (70 years of age, ex smoker, over weight and prior diagnosed with measo) and he went into Broomfield hospital for O2 treatment and was out in 10 days. Is it a pant pooping pandemic or something like nasty flu which the quacks just don’t properly understand? Edit and this appears to me to be the kicker :- Highest weekly deaths recorded in England Wales was the week ending April 17 when there were 22,351 registered. Prior, it was 19,995 people in the last week of 1999, but the country has at least 5m (If not 10m) more people in it since 1999. According to a report from Bonn University the German figure could be up to 10 times the quoted figure. Raja Clavata
I really don't get why we continue to put Germans on a pedestal and feed their tendency to assume a position of superiority over the rest of us. History tells us that's a bad move.

Watching sky news this morning they were discussing an increase in care home deaths of 16,000 over the same period last year. But the interesting thing was that only about half of them tested positive for Corona. So even without Corona there would still be a massive spike in care home deaths. Mungler
Adjusted for population. Strange how the media focus on making us believe the absolute worst of everything. French don’t record deaths at home, Spanish don’t record deaths at all properly anywhere / anyhow, Italians don’t record deaths in care homes and the Germans don’t record the deaths they don’t want to. So why are our media intent on trying to measure us against this lot to paint a failure on the part of the UK? Answers on a post card. Retsdon
Some interesting graphs on this page. https://euromomo.eu/graphs-and-maps But another interesting that asks some hard questions about how (in the UK anyway) the figures above are arrived at. Again, it seems like the system has gone off the rails. https://off-guardian.org/2020/05/05/covid-19-is-a-statistical-nonsense/ Edited May 6, 2020 by Retsdon

If you run a business you look at everything and ask ‘who is paying for that?’ I’m asking that question a lot these days and I’m frightening myself.
