They certainly would have done if things weren't just as bad in Europe.

I'd say this year would be a great time to get people eating game, if we believe all we're told people will be struggling so if the game can be given out free or at process cost, the positive reaction would make a welcome change

I agree but not sure how this can be actioned. Perhaps feed all of the school children over the holidays and keep Rashford happy. Wasn’t Ian Botham proposing a scheme to feed game to the poor. What happened to that?

I normally have no issue with big bag days but in the current climate I worry whether there is a market for the game. I know some smaller shoots that are having to give the birds away. I know there have been rumours in the past of big shoots burying the bag and if it wasn’t happening in the past I suspect it is now.

It was a brave or foolhardy man who put down 95,000 birds this season when there was a strong likely hood of how things would pan out.

Every day was already sold before January so he had little choice. They pay to have the birds processed. It adds £1.50 circa per bird to the cost for the gun, small change at £65/bird!

£65/bird. Never heard of birds that expensive before. That over £4K for a day per gun.

Our shoots have been butchered for the season but at least they are only small fry. My son's godfather puts down 95,000 birds in mid Wales. He will be losing 6/7 days with this two week lockdown. They are  mostly 500 bird days so it is hard to get more days in the week or more birds in a day during the rest of the season.

Your son better tell his godfather to inform the guns to bring a Gatling gun each to make a dent in the 95,000 birds as Mark Dripford is already planing another lockdown Xmas & we haven’t had this one yet 🤬🤬🤬

That’s the list price, over the last 5 years it has increased 25%. Apparently it’s considered one of the top three shoots in the UK for high bird pheasant so can charge whatever it needs to. £4K per day is a drop in the ocean to their clientele, they recently had to go up to 3 helipads due to overcrowding of the first 2 🤣

The men who shoot there are typically international figures from family wealth. He’s booked up 12 months in advance, via non refundable 50% deposits. They poached a chef from a Michelin starred restaurant to cook elevensies. One team pulled out as it is now fibre only and they hadn’t realised, they walked away from their deposit without batting an eyelid. Most of the guns have shot there every year for 15+ years, he has never advertised but calls up the guns to ask how many days they want. There are occasionally a few enquires but he’s sniffy about fully new teams unless there is a known contact. He only sells by the day. Once he has spoken to all his clients he then let’s people know how many days they can have. It is so far removed from the shoots I know it is hard to describe, it is more like a gentleman’s club. The one day I was fortunate enough to shoot there was phenomenal, an experience I will never forget and almost certainly will never be able to repeat.

He has big money at stake, cash flow must be insane. I would not be surprised if he shoots 6 days a week. But rescheduling is presumably difficult as it’s not it is like me and on my local shoot where I can just go next week instead.

You can start another topic if you want to go down the ‘rumour’ path of buried birds, where you can explain your ‘suspicions’ at length, if that’s all you have, but ANY estate spending that sort of money is in serious business and should be equipped for the storage of those shot birds, as are the dealers.
There are always other avenues available rather than dumping, but you’ve heard rumours and have your suspicions.
Lost revenue of six or seven days is regrettable but the numbers of birds accrued over those days is insignificant from a total of 95,000.
If a days shooting is cancelled it follows that there won’t be any game to collect.
I’m a little puzzled why you think in the present climate there would be no market for it.

Well one of the big markets for game birds is Borough Market in London and that is totally knackered at the moment. Hotels are not buying, restaurants are not buying and ordinary costomers are not venturing out

Essential can be a very large word!

Indeed! But did you see the report about the man who just went shopping for "essentials" at Tescos in his boxers?

They made him leave. Does this mean clothes are essential in order to shop, and therefore he should have been able to buy them?!

He did it as a stunt, to illustrate the point.

Personally, I don't believe anyone HAS  buy clothes or TV, phone, pots, pans etc during a specified 2 week period but if it were longer, that would be different.

Everything is about compromise at the moment: there is no single correct answer to the problem that doesn't create a different set of problems.

Mark Drakeford (Wales's First Minister) is a follower and keen supporter of the 'Jeremy Corbyn" style of Labour politics and policies.  It does make you wonder what might have happened had the election last December gone the other way.

Typical hard left "socialist" behaviour  -  "you will do as we tell you or else"

Hopefully this debacle in Wales will show some of the "followers" just what they get when they vote them in,

Apparently they are going to look at the essential items bit tomorrow - will more than likely be phrased "as you have been so very good boys & girls (and everything in between) we are going to allow you ......"

It makes sense if you can go to the supermarket then you can buy what's available,  but it's only two weeks, I'm sure folk will still be ordering things online.

for 70% of the population that is more than likely true - and TBH it does not affect me in the slightest iota - but it is the other 30% it will affect that I am concerned about.

The ones that can't shop online, the ones that need something there and then because of whatever (sensible) reason like I have posted earlier. What I can't get either is that a government is also trying to dictate what people can and can't do down to the nth degree

Flowers are essential (I suppose if you messed up big style and you had to get some for her indoors!!!) but baby products aren't!!

The following isn't much to do with this thread but it popped to mind while typing above

I remember my youngest had like a security blanket that was like a sleeping tablet for him (it was like a quilt off a moses basket) that was lost on the school walk - we bought a moses basket from the same place but the design had changed slightly - we unpicked the thread at the same point and put it into the cot with him when we put him down. It was promptly propelled back out at a high rate of knots followed by his dummy (he literally spat his dummy out) and we didn't get much sleep that night. The next morning when the wife was taking the eldest to school with the youngest in the pram she just happened to look up to see the lost blanket had been put up on the wall. It was promptly washed and given back to him - he was made up!!!

getting things delivered is not so easy in parts of Wales. Supermarkets don't cover all areas for delivery and even if they do getting a slot is next best thing to impossible

Its the principle of the thing being told you can't buy a item. If I wanted said item I wouldn't go any where else any way I would grab it while I was doing my food shop. Who works for who around here. The lock down is too harsh and folks that have used sense are being punished because a bunch of numpties don't care.

A local in the village who owns a holiday let has been informed by the agency they use that a couple are arriving next week for a stay, which is as normal, but when she looked to check their details she discovered they are coming from Wales! She has contacted her agent for clarification and hasn’t had a reply yet, but a bit strange I thought. 🤷‍♂️
