Scully
I’m partial to a puffball, and there was a cluster of three growing in the paddock, but OH ran over them with the mower! Luckily one has survived, and it’s not the biggest I’ve ever found, but it’s a beauty! 🙂
Medic1281
We used to have loads in our fields, but not seen one for a long time. What do you do with them?
Scully
Slice them into strips. Shallow fry them in a mere film of butter and dip them like soldiers into poached eggs. 😋 Edited August 22, 2021 by Scully
strimmer_13
We had loads about 2 weeks ago but just when I spotted them in a quiet spot, leave them for a night, the kids (I assume) had booted them to bits. Fried in garlic butter, bit of toast, a tasty free meal.
Walker570
I did not known they would be edible until they got mentioned on here a couple of years ago. Yep, they are edible and good eating along with other breakfast fare. Of course now I like them I never see one. **** Law.

Rob85
I saw something about eating puffballs on a Facebook group I'm part of, I just couldn't trust myself not to pick up the wrong thing and give myself the squits. What would you compare the flavour to?

I found a massive one the other year and it was tasteless and unpleasant to eat ... maybe due to it's size?

What would you compare the flavour to? Hard to confuse a puffball with anything else, most are the size of a football. ditchman
did you put that egg on top of the puffball on purpose ?
Scully
Did indeed, for the purpose of scale. That is an ostrich egg, and not a hens, despite appearances. Despite it looking impressive, and giving off a great ‘shroom smell, it is absolutely tasteless! Perhaps it was too big? We have another still growing which is only grapefruit sized. We’ll see if it tastes any better.

They do appear over night, and like warm moist atmosphere, 👍 Having a photo of a GIANT puff ball with the egg on can only mean 1 thing. The hen had obviously had a kip over night in a field and the recent high temperature activated the giant puffball spores and there it starts. The hen laid the egg in her sleep and woke up on top of the giant puff ball, not being too keen on heights flew off. Thats it,

mel b3
I've always fancied a puffball sandwich ( ooeer missus ). I like the idea of cutting a slice of puffball , an inch thick, and the size of a slice of bread , then fry it in very garlicy butter ,until the edges get crispy , then put it between two slices of bread 😊. islandgun
For ident purposes a giant puffball is the one you cant get in your basket, Its estimated that a large one can release 7 trillion spores.🙂.. why isnt the world covered in them ?
