starlight32
See a guy over the weekend using 8's on pigeons from the hide over decoys. Never seen 8's used before but this was his regular chioce so he told me. His end of the day bag was'nt too bad either!
Wookie
How close was he letting them get? I'd have thought 8s would have run out of energy pretty quickly. Oh yes, forgot to mention that I use 6.5s only because I got a bit of a deal on two cases of carts. I reckon I'll be trying Lyvale Express 6s after I've got through these. al4x
sounds like one of the let them pretty much land brigade. 8's are only going to result in pricked birds unless they're very close
starlight32
Well I questioned all this and he uses 8's as that are the clay loads he buys and won't buy anything else. I see him take a few birds in the 20-30 yard range they they were well puffed. You always seem to get more feather flying when you use a smaller shot size don't you? Ballymac
I also seen a guy shoot 8's and had 19 birds (crows and pigeons) for 22 carts. He was not letting them land, without assistance from some lead
charlie 1
by using 8's there are more pellets in the air and that should hit the pigeon so more of the meat will be damaged and more feathers falling out as it is being hit by alot more pellets then if you where using a 5 or a 6. that is why there are more pigeons being puffed. but they don't have the energy that a heavier shot size does which is why you shouldn't really use it for pigeon. I don't like using anyhing less than a 5, i use 32g 5 for everything, i get on with it very well. i will also use 4's if i am going to be shooting fairly long distances even on pigeon. charlie
Catamong
The minimum shot size for Pigeons should be 6, with a minimum 30 gram load, (32 grams if your shoulder can take it ). This will ensure consistent, clean kills on most birds at reasonable ranges. I never use clay loads on Pigeons, you'll end up pricking far too many birds. Don't take my word for it, ask Will Beasley or Jim Albone, they earn a living at it, I'll bet they don't recommend 24 g loads in a 20 bore. Cat. I personally never use anything less than 32g, but I do know a few people who use 28g 6's.
Suffolk shooter
I use 32gram 6's for Pigeons and game with the odd box of 30gram 6's for game as well. I use these in fibre wad only and don't have any issue with felt recoil other than when I have mismounted in a hurry. Nice bruise on right upper arm from week and a half ago, due to that. Silly point I know, but shouldn't you be aiming at the head of quarry, "Shoot the pilot not the passenger" or "Bum, Belly, Beak, Bang". If you're aiming at the bird itself, you're going to miss more than you hit as it will jink as you move to keep up with it and that's when pricked birds occur. I had an incident the other week where I fired the first barrel at a pigeon, 20-25 yards out, feathers came out but carried on, gave it second barrel, same thing happened again. So it does happen, even when doing things right SS
Ferret Master
I use 28g of 6's with a fibre wad in my 20 bore and it all comes down to not taking silly shots and putting the barrels in the right place. FM

Real hard hitting long range cartridge. There cost went through the roof so I moved onto starlights.

beatingisbest
I dont know why but the last 6 pigeons i have shot have got up flown off, even having been hit hard. I was using either Gamebore Clear Pigeon 30g 6's with fibre wad, or Eley HB pigeon 32g with 6.5's again with fibre wad.
MC
That is the new super wood pigeon that has been breeding all summer. Don't worry because the decoy selling boys will be along soon with a new gadget to sort them out. Not only will it be made from old sail material and it's wings spin, it will have interchangable tail feathers and articualted legs for realism. They will also be available in HD and cable ready
