smokingdragon
Can anyone recommend a garden fork that doesn't have bendy tines?Β I'm fed up of all mine from Fiskars to no name bargain shop ones with bent tines. We're frequently digging up brambles and have a lot of tree roots as we are steadily reclaiming land that was a dumping ground previously. Most of the reviews on Amazon report bent tines π Cheers Simon Β
Medic1281
Donβt bother with stainless ones from Wilkinson sword. They bend, and their spades do too.Β
old man
Spear and Jackson Neverbend range worth a look?
smokingdragon
Some bad reviews on Amazon, I'm now starting to look at some of the pointed spades which should deal with the roots as they tend to rut as they dig in. Maybe using the wrong tool! Β
enfieldspares
Try local chattel auctions. Or farm dispersal sales. Even eBay! You'll get old, used, grubby forks. But that means they've been well used...and the tines haven't bent when they were used. But in a word...mattocks! Some people call them grub axes according to the internet. That'll at least tell you what they do. Edited November 17, 2021 by enfieldspares
tiny tim
Forks no good for actually getting the roots out Β Β You will bend tines. Β Grubbing mattock is the tool you wantΒ
chrisjpainter
As @tiny timmetioned, a mattock's best for tree roots, but for bramble roots, is it worth looking at a ragwort fork? They're still bent tines, but they're short and solid. and don't bend out. Great for intended purpose, but also work on brambles and small saplings. smokingdragon
Good point about the ragwort fork, I have ragwort as well but don't we don't dry the grass as the geese eat it. We used to have a mattock but I think the shaft broke so I'll have a hunt round for that and put a new handle on it. loriusgarrulus
I use a mattock and a Rootslayer spade to get through tree and bramble roots. Β
Pushkin
I bought A spear and Jackson never bend fork and my wife bent it when trying to clear up stony subsoil.Β I managed to straighten it but message is as stated above, don't use a fork for strong roots or stones. If the roots exceed these limit you will either bend the tines or snap the handle.Β A garden fork is designed to dig soil such as flower beds and the like not digging up the road or levering up a tractor to change a wheel.Β As previous posts have stated get a matlock. Use the right tool for the job. Ps.Β No one can dig up tree roots with a garden fork. Edited November 26, 2021 by Minky
