That 25p a week started about 1978,ridiculous it’s still the same. 25p in 1978 is equal to £2.50 now,and even if it was that much extra at 80 it wouldn’t go far.

Ah well had to laugh, I would think the  cost of sending of the letter would have been a tenner.

Just had a letter from Dep of Pensions. As from my eightieth birthday they are giving me an extra 25 pence per week, WWWwwooooow.

WWWwwooooow. Roll on 5th Sept 2023. Won’t even cover the increased tax on the bottle of wine I buy to celebrate the day.

Come on now - we have to keep these Idle civil servants employed doing things that are years our of date and don't matter.   It gives them an excuse for not doing what matters.:whistling:

The main problem being that what do save from the tax-man will probably end up being spent on accountants and bank fees

Have you Bob , or anyone else lately tried to get to talk to someone from the tax office ? , the reason I asked was they said on the radio the other day that someone was put on hold for nearly four hours , I was going to ring them up to find out why my very small pension was cut from 40 odd pounds a month to £21 , all my spare money , or what little I have got is into Isa's so no tax is paid out , I haven't worked for 15 years and my only income is my state pension , so my private pension is now worth to me about £5 a week and that is working on the same place for close on 30 years .

Is the reduction possibly due to the 10% increase in state pension? The revenue have no means of taxing the state pension so, if you have a company pension then the way it works is that they reduce your personal tax allowance by your state pension and the net result forms your tax code which is then applied by your private pension provider to your pension.

So, your state pension went up then your tax code went down. Which means you pay more tax and your private pension payment goes down.

Just a thought

This is exactly what happens to me. I pay tax on my private pensions. I have told my kids long ago to not have private pensions. Let the state keep you like it does a good percentage of others.

I realise that it is no comfort, but the argument is that you received tax relief on private pension contributions, so you pay tax on the pension and conversely whilst you are working and paying tax and NI, you are clocking up entitlement to a tax-free state pension.
