Mice!
How old is your Grandson? You can't go far wrong with a BSA Ultra, but there are loads to chose from.
Ultrastu
Gamo phox or gx40 os in that price range the phox being very similar to a bsa ultra just with a few down grades like the trigger but the main stuff like barrel and action etc are top quality bsa parts so very good value . sportsbob
Gamo (BSA) now have a GX250, same as the GX40 but with a larger air cylinder.

I found that the most helpful in advice and "odd bits" (for example a stock for the grandson now and a spare for when he gets bigger) would be DRAPER'S in Nottingham. What I;d say and say again is get a make that has a proper trigger pull. BSA triggers and sublime. GAMO triggers are sh*te...odd that as GAMO own BSA but there it is. Well for starters the flatter trajectory is far better for new shooters, the pellets are cheaper, .177 is the pellet for paper target shooting and finally, in my own considerable experience in 60 plus years of shooting, including hunting, target and HFT there really is very little indeed a .22 pellet can do that a well placed .177 pellet cannot do. The Ultra is so nice I have three with my favourite SE in a green tactical Scorpion stock. I've shot and owned many rifle from Air Arms to Theoben and sold them all apart from Ultras and my four QB 78/79 HPA tuned and modded variants as I put my heart and soul into tuning them to shoot as well as any other gun on the market so I will never part with them. Quite frankly every one of them is unique, full of character and so much fun to shoot.
WalkedUp
I bought my boys (8, 6 and 4) a BSA ultra junior in .177 @ 12ftlbs. I considered a Snowpeak PP750 but the lack of adjustability to the collapsible stock, the large size of the hand grip and the low power put me off. The BSA is still too heavy for them, and in my opinion inferior to my 20 year old S410, but it has plenty of capability for them to grow into. I’ve set it up with a red dot sight, very light moderator and low bipod. From the bench they happily and consistently shoot the balloons etc I put out for them. I use a wall of straw bales as a back stop. https://www.krale.shop/en/snowpeak-pp750/ https://www.cheshiregunroom.com/bsa-ultra-jsr-junior-air-rifle Edited September 14, 2023 by WalkedUp

Yes, from the bench it is great for all the reasons you have stated above. The eight year old wants to take on tree rats but his 3lb .410” is far better for that, they prefer to shoot the air rifle due to lower recoil and being almost silent. 17 minutes ago, oldypigeonpopper said: Hello, I would just get a junior HW and wait till their older on the pcp They cannot cock the break barrel and the twangy nature of double recoil is far inferior to the recoiless* PCP in terms of bipod shooting, teaching technique such as both eyes open, follow through etc. But yes as they get older and can head out on their own at the shoot to shoot free-hand, Sat or prone a break barrel is the best for independence and ruggedness. Biffo1262
Bench rested or bipod, most shorter guns are suitable but I had to remove the Ultra butt pad for my 9 year grandson and he's pretty tall for his age. I just taped some foam rubber over the end till his arms get a bit longer. To be fair we went shooting at Atherton Indoor Range a couple of weeks ago and he managed my Ultra SE and my Gunpower Shadow 2 with no problem at all so maybe the butt pad can go back on. The comment about the S400 having the edge over the Ultra....h'mm, I sold my S400 to buy the Ultra SE and have never regretted it; not for one second. I have three Ultras simply for the grandchildren to shoot the other two and quite frankly, as far as accuracy goes there is nothing between the S400 and the Ultra. The S400 is a 'prettier gun' but the Ultra is far more practical and really has it over the S400 in stock options. Shot count isn't a worry as I carry a 300 bar 0.5 litre buddy bottle in a backpack when in the field which is good for a days shooting for top ups. Just personal preferences really.
